The 1978 season of the Primera División was the 75th season (the 47th of the professional era) of the Uruguayan top division in men's football , the Primera División .

The Primera División consisted in the championship season of 1978 from twelve clubs, whose teams met twice in a total of 132 championship games played from mid-March to August of that year. 382 goals were scored. Club Atlético Peñarol won the championship unbeaten as first in the table in front of Nacional Montevideo and promoted Centro Atlético Fénix as second and third in the season's final table . A relegation to the Segunda División was not determined. Peñarol and Nacional qualified for the 1979 Copa Libertadores .

The top scorer was Fernando Morena from master Peñarol with 36 goals for the sixth year in a row .
