History and infrastructure
The Hirzenriegel had been the border against the Hungarians since the High Middle Ages , the place name Wartegg refers to a border post. Since the Kingdom of Hungary belonged to the Habsburg Monarchy, the border location with German-West Hungary lost its importance. After the First World War, Burgenland came to Austria in 1921, which shifted the state border eastwards to the triangle of three countries.
The location is mentioned around 1820 as a vineyard , there were seven farms here (2 in Mühlgraben, 2 in Welten, 1 in Schiefer, and 2 on the border between Welten and Schiefer) and a few other houses.
The local chapel Deutscheck is located in the Sankt-Martin district. She is the St. Vitus , and a branch church of the parish of St. Martin . The first wooden church was built in 1792, burned down again a few years later and was consecrated again in 1798. Today's stone building in neo-baroque country style was inaugurated in 1870. It is a listed building and was renovated in 1983.
The place lies on the edge of the cross-border nature park Raab-Őrség-Goričko , the Austrian part is the Burgenland nature park Raab . The Neuhauser Hügelland cycle path (B70) leads through the village , with a 43.3 km long circuit from St. Martin via Oberdrosen , Tauka , Kalch , Neuhaus am Klausenbach , the Hirzenriegel , Welten and Doiber back to St. Martin.
