The Schauspiel Zentrum Köln (formerly the German Center for Drama and Film ) is a state-recognized professional school for actors in the fields of theater , film and television, founded in 1994 . The acting methods of Michael Chekhov , Konstantin Sergejewitsch Stanislawski and Bertolt Brecht are taught . The actor Arved Birnbaum acts as the headmaster .

history

The school was founded in 1994 under the name Center for Drama, Dance and Movement by the director and acting teacher Gisela Olroth-Hackenbroch . The school was initially located in the Ahl Poller Schull, a listed building built in 1846 in the Cologne district of Poll on the right bank of the Rhine . A few years after the school opened, Olroth-Hackenbroch also founded the theater Das Spielbrett to provide a stage for students.

In 2006 the actor Arved Birnbaum took over the direction, while Olroth-Hackenbroch is still a lecturer today. At the same time, the school was renamed the German Center for Drama and Film . In 2012 the facility moved to the former MMC studios in Hürth and was given another name with the Schauspiel Zentrum . The former film studio site near Cologne housed the school until 2018 and enabled the training program to be expanded.

Since the beginning of 2018, the school has been located on Severinstraße in the Cologne district of the same name.

education

Practice-oriented vocational training is offered , in which the students work on theater and film projects at an early age. The center works together with the directing classes of the Art Academy for Media Cologne . The center has its own theater and cinema as well as the Odeon cinema in Cologne for demonstrations of project work by students. In addition, projects with the Filmstiftung NRW provide additional insights into the Rhenish film and television landscape.

Describing itself as a “school for life”, the Schauspiel Zentrum, according to its own statement, focuses on the personal development and strengthening of the students and at the same time imparts the technical skills of acting.

The school principal has been an actor, director and author Arved Birnbaum since 2006. About the school's credo, he says: “Acting is always more than just depicting characters in a play or a film. In order to play a role properly, it has to be understood and filled with life. Therefore, a cornerstone of our training is that we give the students everything they need to play a role with self-confidence and energy with full body awareness - so that it is lively, convincing and authentic. "
