DiE DR3i (spoken: The Three , Subtitle: News from Rocky Beach ) was a radio play series based on the American youth book series The Three Investigators by Robert Arthur , better known as The Three ??? based. The spelling DiE DR3i is reminiscent of the author Robert Arthur and the well-tried serial abbreviation T3I in the USA as a short form for The Three Investigators .

Emergence

The original series was published by the US publisher Random House . The Kosmos-Verlag had the license to exploit the Random House The-Three-Investigators acquired series for the German market and in turn awarded the rights to the audio adaptation to the label Europe. From 1979 on, radio plays by the three ??? , based on the books. → History of the series The three ???

Due to a copyright dispute between Kosmos-Verlag and Sony BMG , to which the Europa label belongs, Europa decided in early 2005 not to publish any further episodes based on the Kosmos-Verlag book templates. At this point in time the books " Spur ins nothing" and ... and the ghost train were already completely recorded as a radio play.

Sony BMG finally acquired all German rights to Arthur's works and the use of the original characters and locations from the heirs of Robert Arthur in 2006, independently of Kosmos-Verlag . Because of the trademark protection of the word mark Die Drei ??? Europe avoided using this brand and the names created by Kosmos. Instead, the original characters and names, which are based on Arthur's idea, have now been used. Europe continued the radio play series under the name DiE DR3i ; the stories were written especially for the radio play series and were no longer based on the books. → Further information on the legal dispute

With the advertising agency Die Drei! , whose brand name is also registered, was agreed in 2007 and was allowed to use this brand name from then on for the publishing industry, where there were overlapping trademarks.

For its part, Kosmos-Verlag continued the book series under the familiar title and with the familiar character names.

On February 13, 2008, Sony BMG announced that Kosmos and Sony BMG had agreed on a new license agreement. The book and trademark rights on which the radio plays are based remain as before with Kosmos-Verlag, which is also responsible for all other published products on the basis of the series. All audio usage rights including the entire catalog as well as stage and theater shows and the marketing of merchandising licenses remain with Europe. Since April 4, 2008, new episodes have been released under the title Die Drei ??? which, as in the past, are based on the books by Kosmos-Verlag.

The original radio plays of the DiE DR3i series were discontinued on January 1, 2009 and are no longer regularly available in stores.

Characters

The Dr3i are a junior detective team based in a fictional California coastal town called Rocky Beach (near Los Angeles ). Together with Inspector Milton from the Rocky Beach Police Department , they solve their cases.

Jupiter Jones

Jupiter is the leader and first detective of the detective agency Die Dr3i . He is extremely intelligent , which he likes to flaunt. Therefore, to a lot of people he seems clever and a little arrogant. In the detective trio, he also leaves no doubt about his dominance . When he thinks, he often kneads his lower lip. He lives with his aunt and uncle. Jupiter's uncle owns a second-hand goods shop. The Dr3i have their "headquarters" in an old caravan in the scrapyard. Jupiter is overweight and has tried a wide variety of diets without achieving great success. He's not lacking in humor either. He knows how to change people's minds by giving lengthy lectures in his often somewhat complicated tone. ( → Justus Jonas from the three ??? )

Peter Crenshaw

Peter is the second detective. He is tall, slim and an absolute sports fanatic. Hardly anyone is as nimble as he, and he also has clear strengths in combat. Although he usually appears very skeptical or even fearful in briefings, he is surprisingly courageous in specific dangerous situations. His occasional fear is fed by his tendency to superstition. He is a specialist in opening doors and door locks, and he opens all doors with his popular lockpick set. ( → Peter Shaw from the three ??? )

Bob Andrews

Bob is responsible for research and archives. He wears contact lenses and is noticeably more attractive to girls (which he is well aware of and is sometimes used in cases). Since he used to work in a library, he has a lot of experience in rummaging through seemingly endless archives ( → Bob Andrews of the three ??? )

Special editions

Hotel Luxury End

This is a hands-on case on a double CD of the DR3i in which the listener actively controls the course of the case. The listener can come to a total of 16 different ends of the case. The two CDs consist of a total of 50 selectable titles, which consist of a two-minute introduction that appears on both CDs, 16 short titles that explain which next step you can choose, and 32 titles in the familiar narrative style. The idea comes from the author Ivar Leon Menger and was published in stores on November 24, 2006.

The author has at least three references from the novel in choosing the plot and characters Shining by Stephen King added:

  1. The Torrance family, who are the protagonists in the novel
  2. Lloyd the bartender (from Stanley Kubrick 's film of the same name )
  3. Mr. Overlook, Overlook is the name of the hotel in Shining
  4. Mr. Overlook, who is voiced by Jack Nicholson's German dubbing voice Joachim Kerzel , but who dubbed his boss in the film, not him
  5. Mr. Stanley, whose name is a reference to the real name of the hotel from The Shining (The Stanley).

Jupiter vs. Justus - The Dr3i give up

To mark the farewell to the DiE DR3i series , Oliver Rohrbeck and his listening lounge published a free mini radio play with Justus Jonas and Jupiter Jones. Justus Jonas - known as the 1st detective from Rocky Beach - receives a call at his headquarters. A strange guy named Jupiter from Die Dr3i tells about the same friends, strange names and wants to give him back his detective agency. Jupiter doesn't quite get behind it yet, but he thinks The three ??? have a new case! The idea came from Katrin Wiegand and was made available as a download on April 2nd, 2008.

Connection between Die drei ??? and DiE DR3i

Europe has hidden various Easter eggs in the radio plays of the DR3i . A connection between the three ??? and the DR3i pointed out.

Sequence Numbers

Apparently, the old numbering (i.e. after episode 120) was continued for the fans, albeit in a hidden way. The unofficial numbers can be found directly on the cover picture:

Sequence number of the three ??? Sequence number of the DR3i Note
121 1 Part 1: On the sign that belongs to the boat; Part 2: On the phone number that is stuck under the sign
122 2 House number on the left
123 3 Below the wing of the aircraft
124 4th On the postcard as the house number of the address
125 5 On the belt next to the opened box
126 6th On the ring binder that's on the mixer
127 7th In the car's digital display
128 8th on the notepad in front of the plate with the cake pieces (on the CD cover in part from the north of the writing N obscured ew from Rocky Beach)

Reference to The Three ???

In episode 8 The Centennial Stone is displayed directly on Die Drei ??? because Jupiter mentions that they already know Taro from the Golden Belt case . This is episode 22 The three ??? and the missing treasure . Here Taro (both with the same last name) occurs. It is worth mentioning that these are different authors.

Also in episode 7 ... and the headless rider you can find references to episode 34 of the three ??? ... and the red pirate through a zombie movie quote. Another supposed allusion is with episode 125 of the three ??? To see the moon of fire , in which the control center is again buried under rubble. The Dr3i plan to clearly hide the headquarters again in order to position themselves closer to the old original stories and to be able to better use the secret passages.

Trivia

As episode 8, the story The Living Painting by André Minninger was initially planned. Instead, The Century Stone appeared as episode 8. Due to the termination of the legal dispute and the associated suspension of the series, The Living Painting was no longer published as a DiE-DR3i episode. In 2010 the story appeared slightly reworked as TKKG episode 171.

In every episode - both in Die drei ??? as with DiE DR3i - the detectives' business card is offered at least once. At The Three ??? it is always read out, either in full or at least in part. With DiE DR3i, on the other hand, the recipients of the card thankfully decline it every time.
