A case for TKKG (short: TKKG ) is a German youth book series and based on it the same radio drama series from Stefan Wolf . After his death in 2007, the series will be continued with various authors at the express request of the creator. However, the book series was discontinued in 2011. The radio play series has been produced by Europe since 1981 under the direction of Heikedine Körting . The first episode appeared on March 31, 1981. With 14 million books sold and 33 million radio play cassettes and CDs sold, the series is one of the most successful German youth book series. In German-speaking countries, the series is valid alongside the series of books and radio plays The three ??? as the most commercially successful series in its genre. The series also won 41 gold records and one platinum record.
Plot and characters
TKKG is an acronym and stands for the protagonists T im (formerly called Tarzan ), K arl, K lößchen and G aby. As a TKKG gang, the four young people solve criminal cases . They are supported by Gaby's dog Oskar and her father, Detective Inspector Emil Glockner. The figures are, depending on the volume, between 12 and 17 years old (Gaby is 12 in the first volume and Klößchen's 13th birthday is in volume 8 On the trail of the bird hunters ). In the later volumes all are 14 years old.
Peter Timotheus Carsten
T im / T arzan is the leader of the TKKG gang; his real name is Peter Timotheus Carsten. He is also the main protagonist of the series. In the revision of the books ( cbj avanti Verlag ) he is called Tim Carsten. He lives in the boarding school with dumplings in a room called “Eagle's Nest”. Tim is a martial artist. At the beginning he practiced almost exclusively judo , but later mainly jiu jitsu . In book 54, Lord of Snake Island , he practiced Kung Fu . He was therefore initially nicknamed Tarzan . Since Tarzan is protected by trademark law and can only be used for a license fee, this name had to be given up for the figure and a middle name introduced with Timotheus, or Tim for short. The name change takes place in the story The White Smuggler's Yacht (Volume 32, radio play sequence: 38). Within the TKKG universe, this change is explained by the fact that Peter drops this name after seeing a Tarzan film and no longer wants to be compared to it. But then he learns about his middle name. In more recent episodes he is sometimes called a chief by his gang members , which shows that he takes the leading role of TKKG.
Karl Vierstein
K arl Vierstein is also called a “computer” because he has a phenomenal memory. His father's occupation is listed in the old editions as Professor of Physics, in the editions of Random House (cbj) from 2004 as Professor of Mathematics and Physics and in the revised editions (cbj avanti) as Professor of Theoretical Physics. His mother's occupation is not given in the earlier editions; it is not even clear whether she has any job or is a housewife. In the revised editions, however, it has its own pharmacy. Karl is quite balanced and a loyal companion. He is tall and lanky with a "greyhound face" and wire glasses. He cleans his glasses when he gets excited. He often bores the others with his lectures.
Dumplings
K lößchen (actually: Willi Sauerlich) bears the name because of its figure, which comes from his love for chocolate. His father is a wealthy chocolate manufacturer. Dumpling decides to go to boarding school with Tim because it's not as boring as at home. He's funny and it's always good to have him with you. Sometimes, however, he acts a little too hastily, but at times has phenomenal flashes of inspiration that (often unnoticed by him) are helpful in following a hot lead.
Gaby Glockner
G aby Glockner, whose full name is Gabriele, is the only girl in the union. She got her nickname "Paw" because she is so fond of animals and lets every dog shake her paw. Her father is Detective Inspector Emil Glockner. She has golden blonde hair and blue eyes with long, black eyelashes and is described as an extraordinarily pretty girl. She is brave and just. Her mother runs a delicatessen shop under the Glockner's apartment. Gaby also owns a dog named Oskar, who is blind in one eye. She is an animal rights activist.
Oscar
Gaby's black and white cocker spaniel Oskar is the unofficial fifth member . Even if he is blind in one eye, thanks to his nose he is a helpful assistant in investigations.
More people
- Emil Glockner is the detective inspector and father of Gaby. He often helps the TKKG gang and he is often referred to as his fatherly friend due to his good relationship with Tim.
- Margot Glockner is Gaby's mother and works in her grocery store under Glockner's apartment.
- Erna Sauerlich is the mother of dumplings and a very strict vegetarian.
- Hermann Sauerlich is Willi's father and owner of a chocolate factory.
- Albert Vierstein is a professor and Karl's father. Albert's wife and Karl's mother is called Elisabeth.
- Susanne Carsten is Tim's mother. Since her husband Maximilian, a civil engineer, died in an accident, she has often struggled to get through with herself and her son. So Tim supports them as best he can. She works as an accountant in a big city far away from the TKKG city, which is why mother and son cannot see each other often.
- Inspector Bienert, called Wespe, is a good friend of TKKG, who often appears as a representative of Inspector Glockner in later episodes.
History of the series
The series was created in 1979 by the German writer Rolf Kalmuczak . The books were published under the pseudonym Stefan Wolf , because the animal name Wolf made it more memorable, especially for the younger crowd. The series was actually supposed to be published under the name The Four Friends , but since there was already a book series for young people entitled Five Friends by Enid Blyton , Kalmuczak decided on an emergency solution. He named the series after the first letters of the four friends: TKKG ( T arzan [later Tim], K arl, K lößchen, G aby). In his novels, it was a central concern of young people to pack social issues such as alcohol, drugs, clothing, cars, friendship and parties in a crime story and a case for TKKG. The first five books were published by Pelikan AG's in-house publishing house on the occasion of the Frankfurt Book Fair in 1979. In his youth, the author Kalmuczak attended the Pädagogium Bad Sachsa boarding school .
Chronology of the first volumes
- The hunt for the millionaire thieves (Volume 1)
- The blind clairvoyant (Volume 2)
- The empty grave in the moor (Volume 3)
- The package with the skull (volume 4)
- The phantom on the fire chair (Volume 5)
In the 1980s, in addition to the regular hardcovers , 16 paperback books were published with stories not yet published in hardcover, which were later reprinted in hardcover in so-called triple volumes. The hardcover No. 9 - Adventure in the holiday camp was also published in the form of five so-called tramp books . There was also an offshoot series for younger readers from the age of seven - Die 2 and TKKG with much more harmless cases, which TKKG regularly helped solve. The heroes here were Thomy and his dog Bobby, who had six adventures.
Since 1981, a radio play series based on the book series has been published by Europa under the direction of Heikedine Körting . Only the first 31 episodes are identical with the numbering of the books. Then the books were set to music in different order. Since 1995, TKKG cases have also appeared that are not based on a book, but only exist as radio play scripts.
The TKKG books were originally published by Pelikan AG 's in -house publishing house ; in June 2004 the publisher switched to cbj- Verlag. In January 2005, he published volumes 7, 14, 54, 77 and 84 as a new edition with its own cbj logo. Since June 2005 all volumes have been available in new editions from cbj-Verlag. The radio plays , published by Europa , celebrated their 25th anniversary in 2006 with episode 150. After the success of the TKKG radio play series, Kalmuczak began in the 1990s to write his own radio play manuscripts in addition to implementing the book templates.
Series restart
After the author's death on March 10, 2007, the radio play label Europe announced that the series of radio plays would be continued "at the express request of the deceased" anyway. Since then, all rights to the TKKG brand have been owned by Sony Music Entertainment . This commissioned the marketing company KB&B Advertising to sell the TKKG licenses. The TKKG board game by Schmidt Spiele and the magazine by Ehapa result from this cooperation . The biggest change can be seen since the series was relaunched in October 2009. The cover has been completely redesigned and new computer-colored images have been used since then (see also the illustration section ). The publisher of the books cbj has also decided to completely rewrite the first volumes of the series in addition to new illustrations. The author Herbert Friedmann was commissioned to revise the first 12 episodes based on the first editions of Kalmuczak. The new versions appeared in 2010 and 2011.
Book break
No new books have been published since 2012. In response to a request from a fansite, Random House said at the end of January 2013 that their imprint "cbj avanti" (on which the books appear) was not in effect and that no new TKKG books would be published until further notice. However, a continuation of the series has not been ruled out. Since the situation could change at short notice, the publisher does not want to publish an official statement.
Radio play litigation and dismissal of Niki Nowotny
In June 2016, an ongoing legal dispute about the fee between the radio play label Europa and Karl's spokesman, Niki Nowotny, escalated . According to Nowotny, his fee should have been too low, as he believed the publisher's assurances that lower sales would not allow a higher fee. Renegotiations about the financial participation were unsuccessful, however, since the demand from Nowotny and the offer from Europe were too far apart.
As a result, the speaking role of Karl Vierstein von Europa was filled with Tobias Diakow from episode 198 onwards.
In addition, due to the legal dispute, the radio play episodes 195, 196 and 197, in which Nowotny could still be heard as Karl Vierstein, have not been available in stores since the end of June 2016. Nowotny has not signed a contract for these consequences. Europe nevertheless published the aftermath, believing that Nowotny had tacitly granted the rights by participating in the aftermath. Nowotny obtained an injunction against episodes 196 and 197 before the Munich I Regional Court , as the fee was already being disputed at the time of the recording. The publication of episode 195 should not have been known to Nowotny and the court at the time, but this episode was also taken off the market due to the injunction.
At the end of September 2016, Europe published a new version of episodes 195, 196 and 197. In it, the places where Niki Nowotny could be heard before have been replaced by the new speaker Tobias Diakow.
Radio play sale of the old episodes
In December 2012, Europe announced that it would only sell episodes 1–99 digitally and that it would cease CD sales.
About a month after the anniversary episode 200 was released in March 2017, the sale of the old episodes was completely discontinued without prior notice from the label.
On December 7, 2018, episodes 1-99 were made available again for download and streaming. Episodes 19, 20 and 37 are missing because they were classified as critical and “not suitable for children” in an examination by the FSK . The term TKKG Retro-Archiv is used to distinguish them from the more recent episodes. In addition, the age recommendation from 12 years is now on the covers .
ProSiebenSat.1 & TKKG Junior
In September 2017, Europe announced that TKKG was now part of the ProSiebenSat.1 Licensing portfolio . The company will try to find new partners for merchandise products .
At the same time, a new theme world was announced in the TKKG universe with TKKG Junior . It is intended primarily for preschool and primary school children, while the “classic” series is intended for children between 8 and 14 years of age. This should also ensure that the cases in the actual series can be made more exciting and complex again. The first episodes were released in July 2018. These episodes were directed by radio play producer Frank Gustavus. The main roles are voiced by Sebastian Fitzner , Felix Strüven , Julian Greis and Liza Ohm .
In October 2018, the first TKKG Junior radio games were published in an English version under the name TKKG - Junior Investigators . The characters were renamed Tom (formerly Tim), Kyle (Karl), Kelvin (Willie, called Dumpling ) and Gabby (Gaby) and spoken by Oli Dillon, George Black, Ben Lewis and Alice Birrell.
Authors
Stefan Wolf was the only author of the series until his death in 2007, but HG Francis and later André Minninger helped him with the scripts for the radio plays. The first episode that did not come from the pen of Stefan Wolf is the blackmailer ride roller coaster (156) by André Minninger , published on November 16, 2007 . Since then, the label has been a radio play based on Stefan Wolf (previously: by Stefan Wolf ). In 2010 and 2011 the first 12 volumes of TKKG were completely revised by the author Herbert Friedmann based on the first editions by Stefan Wolf. Martin Hofstetter has been the lead author of the series since 2013 .

Sequence index
There is not a book and radio play edition for every case of TKKG. Between 1983 and 1989, 16 so-called Tramp pocket books (TB) were published, which were reissued as three-part edited volumes in the 1990s. Based on the Tramp books, two episodes appeared in 1985 as Super Tramp editions (ST). With the radio play sequence Crash-Kids risk their lives (91), a story that is only available as a radio play script was set to music for the first time, which was followed by more. Volumes 85, 89, 92 and 97 contain, in addition to the main case, other short stories, two of which were implemented as separate radio play series (111 and 112).
The first twelve books were revised by Herbert Friedmann and republished in a new version. The first six appeared in 2010, the remaining six in 2011.

criticism
The TKKG stories, especially the early episodes, often use clichés to clearly identify criminals. They can often be recognized by their appearance (scars, special body and facial features such as red hair and lots of freckles) or by their origin (e.g. southerners, gypsies ), social group membership (rockers, punks, homeless people) or their profession . According to critics, Wolf makes use of social and popular prejudices and stereotypes. Occasionally, groups of people are commented on in a derogatory manner - this is how the trainer Alwin Gutsche in Ufos in Bad Finkenstein describes members of his own judo team as " Caraway Turks ".
Particularly striking is the often derogatory comments made by socially disadvantaged groups such as B. the homeless through TKKG itself. On the other hand, TKKG also advocate members or entire minorities from the start. Positive figures are z. B. Introduced ethnic minorities who contradict the clichés of other consequences. In these contradictions, the inconsistent behavior of the TKKG friends themselves is particularly noticeable, on the one hand they appear moralizing, but on the other hand they circumvent their self-determined morality through their own prejudice and often attempted “the end justifies the means”. In the older episodes in particular, Tim often uses preventive violence, which, unlike in the later episodes, is not just self-defense.
The protagonists are portrayed quite exaggerated. Tarzan / Tim is the tall, tanned, strong, sporty man. Karl is lanky, weak, but intelligent - the typical nerd. Dumpling is fat, gnawed, lazy (but not stupid). In addition, Gaby's bewitching beauty is referred to in practically every episode. In later episodes she is also jealous of women Tim has contact with, with a relationship between the two being indicated in these episodes.
Another example is the role of women. Although Wolf often shows strong female figures and the TKKG friends advocate equality between the sexes, Gaby is regularly excluded from the group in dangerous situations or when undertaking late-night activities (Tarzan / Tim: “Girls your age belong in bed at this time "). In the interview, Wolf states the number of female readers as 60%.
language
Wolf put the TKKG friends allegedly to the youth and slang words ajar (z. B. bike , soap makers away go on and on,) or phrases into the mouth, the z. T. be translated into footnotes. Words from the youth language of past decades were also used, especially in the first few years (e.g. Pauker, Penne). This pseudo-youth slang was increasingly enriched with anglicisms in the 1990s and deviated more and more from the actual youth language. Wolf uses here z. Sometimes a Germanized spelling of English words (e.g. Taubenmörder-Konnäktschn from Murderous Family Tree ) and means that "the language has grown up" within the series . He continues: “The kids made a leap through the overstimulation, and not just for the better. Nowadays they often can't get complete sentences, they speak in ellipses or in catchwords. ” ( , P. 88) This exaggerated use of Anglicisms is criticized as bad even by Karl in the radio play Operation Witches-Graffiti .
The names of many actors also consist of puns, e.g. B. Mr. Contrechien (French: opponent of dogs) who poisoned a dog (episode: death bite of the black mamba ), Sheikh Schacha Ben Öhli (episode: Who stole the millionaire horse ? ), Inspector Belief nothing, Hans-Henning von Socke-Paulmann (episode : Enemy from the Past ), Dr. Remplem (episode: Vampire of the Autobahn ), Carlo Bijou (French: jewelry) as a jeweler (episode: Tim's most dangerous opponent ), the Chinese thief Xiang Prey Teeth (episode: Lord of the Snake Island ), dentists Dr. Beißinger (episode: attention, the "monsters" are coming ) and Dr. Brechaußer (episode: horror trip in a luxury car ). Some place names also offer an incentive to laugh, such as B. Oberkirchweidenbüggetal-Ennsling (result of ambush in Eulenforst ), Vierlingstetten-Oberwurz (result of black plague from India ), the Austrian holiday resort Bad Fäßliftl, Klein-Auersheim-Prillstetten or the “Fallaut” nuclear power plant (result: missing kids and killer plants ). Wolf himself emphasizes the comedy of his stories in an interview when asked about his series concept: "I'm kidding about football, mass events and this 'Fit for Fun'." ( , P. 86)
In episode 164 (Operation Witches Graffiti) the four are given aliases, which are the first names of their respective speakers: Tim - Sascha, Karl - Niki, Willi - Manou, Gaby - Veronika.
Illustrations
Until 2009, Reiner Stolte was mainly responsible as an illustrator for all illustrations and cover motifs for books and radio plays. In 2009, rights holder Sony Music Entertainment decided to adapt the illustrations to the tastes of today's children. Since then, computer-colored images have been used. These are still based on artwork templates by Reiner Stolte and are now digitally processed by the illustration studio Comicon SL . The books in the cbj publishing house have also been provided with new illustrations. Gerhard Schröder has been responsible for the covers and drawings in the books since November 2010. Gradually, not only should new episodes appear in the new design, but the old episodes should also be adapted.
Adaptations
Radio plays
The radio play series has been published by Hörspiel-Verlag Europa since 1981 . The director is Heikedine Körting . All episodes of the series were released as radio drama cassettes until 2012. In October 2011, Europe announced that from 2012 all radio plays will only be produced on CD. Episodes 1 to 12 were also released on record in the first edition . In addition to the release of new episodes on CD, the older episodes were gradually available on CD. In addition to the replacement of some music tracks, text passages were also removed. From 2003 to mid-2009, these new editions were sold in 14 TKKG collector's boxes , each containing three chronological episodes in a cardboard slipcase. Crime boxes have been appearing since 2010, each containing three episodes. Since, in addition to the regular hardcover books, books from the TKKG paperback series and later radio play scripts were set to music without a book, the following numbering of the TKKG radio plays differs from that of the hardcover books. Every year 4 to 6 new episodes appear as a radio play.
music
For the radio play publications from 1981 to 1986, pieces of music by Carsten Bohn were used. After the start of a legal dispute between Bohn and Europe, no more music by Bohn was used from episode 34. In later re-releases of episodes 1 to 33, pieces of music by Bohn were replaced.
The title melody of the first 33 episodes (text: "TKKG. Juh. TKKG. Huh. Tarzan, Karl and Klößchen ... with the new note ... and Gaby the paw. Yes, that's us, the new four. Tarzan is the head of it all. Karl quickly lets the facts dance. Dumpling is a good guy. Gaby loves Tarzan. ") Was sung on the instrumental piece" No, No, No "by Bohn. It was made possible by the theme song with the text "TKKG, die Profis in spe. TKKG, die Profis in spe. We solve any case for you, if you want anywhere. TKKG! " replaced. Different variations of the song (song of the radio play speakers, song of the TV series actors, different versions without song) of the song are used again and again in the radio plays.
The musicians Jan-Friedrich Conrad, Constantin Stahlberg, Jens-Peter Morgenstern and Andris Zeiberts are responsible for the interludes from episode 34.
criticism
Wolf did not like the successful early versions of the novels as radio plays ( , p. 90) . Wolf comments on his work on the radio plays from episode 90 by saying that he is conceiving “completely different versions” ( , p. 90) for the consumers of the various media novels and radio plays . Many listeners accuse Wolf of not getting close to the density of previous scripts by screenwriter HG Francis . This criticism was also taken up by the specialist journal Bulletin Jugend & Literatur : "Redundancies are being increased, connections and tension are now (by the narrator) asserted: 'Now it became very dangerous, there was a great danger ...'"
audience
TKKG is aimed at young listeners between the ages of 6 and 12 (boys and girls). Today, an estimated 10% of listeners are older than 25 years. A similar phenomenon can be seen in the series Die Drei ???, also produced by Europe. , there in an even stronger form. Many of the listeners rediscover the series from their childhood in young adulthood. It offers an opportunity to relax and indulge in your own childhood memories.

Under the title TKKG - The Detective Club , KiKA broadcast a children's program from 1998 to 2002 and later again from 2005 to 2006, in which two advice teams competed against each other. In 2014, an animated series was released entitled A Case for TKKG .
In 1992 the first movie A Case for TKKG: Dragon Eye was released. The battle for the magic sword "Dragon Eye" was later published as a regular book (volume 68) in the series and set to music as episode 88 of the radio play series. In 2006, TKKG - The Secret of the Enigmatic Mind Machine, a second TKKG feature film, came to the cinema. This time the four detectives were represented by Jannis Niewöhner (Tim), Jonathan Dümcke (Karl), Lukas Eichhammer (Klößchen) and Svea Bein (Gaby). Lukas Eichhammer is the son of the cameraman Klaus Eichhammer and the director Susanne Eichhammer. A new movie with a new cast was released in June 2019 .
Live playback theater on TV
On October 18, 2019, the Sat.1 television show Luke! The week and I held a live playback theater at TKKG. The original radio play speakers Manou Lubowski and Sascha Draeger as well as Tobias Diakow were guests on the show and once again gave their characters the voice, while four people played the characters on the stage and only moved their lips.
The presenter Luke Mockridge took on the role of Tim , actress Emilia Schüle who played Gaby and Faisal Kawusi played dumplings . The character Karl played a spectator from the audience. A colleague from Mockridge spoke the character Gaby because her speaker was unable to attend due to lack of time. Torsten Sträter took over the part of the narrator . Ralf Richter played the role of the villain .
Comics and magazines
Between 1987 and 1989 Ehapa- Verlag published 17 comic books by TKKG (issues 1–2 / 1987, 1–12 / 1988 and 1–3 / 1989). The comics were produced by the Comicon studio, the draftsman was Josep Marti , who also drew for Yps , among others .
The content of the comic consisted of two completed comic stories, which initially reproduced stories from the novels. In later editions, however, stories were told without a template. In addition, there was information for the fan, tips from members of TKKG and always a mystery thriller that the reader could solve himself.
In 2008, Ehapa-Verlag again published a two-month issue under the title “TKKG the official detective magazine”, which, in addition to various “detective” puzzles and mystery mysteries, also contained a new comic story. However, the series was discontinued in 2009.
persiflage
As part of the author duo Kai + Sven , Kai Schwind , author of the TKKG anniversary episode No. 175, created the series Die Ferienbande together with Sven Buchholz in 2003 . Originally conceived as a radio comedy lasting only a few minutes, after thirteen radio episodes it became an independent series of radio plays with eleven other publications and three live tours so far.
Also in the unique concept of the full playback theater , which has existed since 1997 and which uses the Cento technology for its performances , not only quotes from other radio drama series, films and TV series, but also samples from TKKG episodes are part of the plot.
In addition, Daniel Rakete Siegel made a film parody of the series entitled Ein Fall für KBBG in 2007, as a graduation film of his studies in film directing .
