The Spiderwick Chronicles (Original title: The Spiderwick Chronicles ) is a fantasy and adventure film in 2008 by director Mark Waters . The film is based on the book series The Spiderwick Secrets by author Holly Black .

action

The twins Jared and Simon Grace, their sister Mallory and their divorced mother Helen move from New York to an old house of their great-uncle Arthur Spiderwick. The house is empty because Arthur Spiderwick has been missing for 80 years, and his daughter Lucinda Spiderwick was declared insane after her father's disappearance and was admitted to a sanatorium for claiming that her father was kidnapped by Sylphs.

Some objects disappear in the house, for which Jared is first blamed. Jared feels like the family scapegoat at times. He also gets angry easily, then he hits objects in anger, even if his older sister annoys him again or someone talks about his parents' divorce, from which he suffers greatly.

The curious Jared investigates and not only discovers the ambivalent elf man Thimbletack (when he gets upset, he turns into an angry boggart), who is by his side with advice and action from then on, but also a book about a fantastic world full of people Goblins , fairies and other magical creatures written by his great-uncle Arthur. Jared tells his siblings about the book and about Thimbletack; however, they consider it nonsense. They only believe him when Simon is kidnapped by goblins and Mallory attacked by them. The goblins obey the ogre Mulgarath, who wants to bring the book under his control in order to rule the world with his knowledge. The twins and their sister can take refuge in the house, which is protected by a protective circle made of mushrooms, which the beings cannot cross.

Now, however, they can no longer leave the house because it is being besieged by the goblins. The children discuss what to do with Thimbletack and decide to visit their aunt Lucinda. Jared and Mallory enter the city through a secret system of tunnels, but are followed by a mole troll. You can escape him when he is hit by a car on the street. Simon stays behind because his leg was injured while fighting the goblins. He and Thimbletack take care of the defense of the house. From the book he learned that tomato sauce corrodes the goblins like acid, vinegar vapors suffocate them and salt blinds them.

Meanwhile, Jared and Mallory are pursued by the goblins again. However, they manage to shake off their pursuers and make their way to the sanatorium to see their great aunt. She - now 86 years old - advises them to find their father Arthur, who has to destroy the book. During the conversation, they are attacked again, and the attacker manages to get hold of a few pages of the book. Then her mother bursts in and drives her back to the house. You tell her about everything that happened, but she doesn't believe them. The topic of conversation falls back on her father Richard, Jared leaves the car angrily and blames his mother for the fact that his father is gone. From the good goblin Hogsqueal , Jared learns that the goblins have, among other things, snatched a page from the book that explains how to break the protective ring around the house.

He calls his father to get help from him. However, when his father doesn't answer the phone, his sister tells him that he is now with another woman. With the help of a griffin , they fly to the world of the elves to find their great uncle Arthur. They meet him in a clearing. Not aged a day by the magic of the fairies and distracted by their chants, he has not noticed that he has been in their power for 80 years. When Arthur is asked to destroy the book, they find out that Thimbletack has switched it because he thought it was safer in the house.

They manage to return at the last second - but without Arthur, because he would crumble to dust in the real world since he is already 125 years old. You have no choice but to wait for Mulgarath's attack and repel it as best you can. When her mother returns from town, she too is attacked by goblins. Now she is also helping them to protect the book. When the full moon is in the night sky, the goblins attack. The defenders manage to kill almost all of the goblins. The final battle between Jared and Mulgarath takes place on the roof of the house. Jared then throws the book off the roof. The ogre wants to catch the book and therefore turns into a raven, but in the process he is eaten by the crazy bird Hogsqueal. With Mulgarath's death, the goblins are also defeated. At the end there is a clarifying conversation and reconciliation between Jared and his mother. Since Arthur cannot stay in their world, Lucinda decides to return to the elven world with her father and stay with him forever. When she offers him her hand, she transforms back into the child who lost his father back then.

Reviews

Marcus Wessel wrote on programmkino.de: “The strengths [...] are mainly in the first half of the film, when the siblings explore their new home and come across strange, fantastic creatures [...]. It has charm, is rich in atmosphere and stimulates the spirit of discovery among the younger target audience - the film is recommended for children aged 8 and over. The effects are also at a remarkable level. […] Unfortunately Waters overdid it with the action for the last half hour. Then the pleasantly straightforward fantasy story turns into a hectic run that sometimes loses sight of its youthful protagonists in the thunderstorm. Less would clearly have been more here. "

Thomas Ays wrote on moviesection.de: “Approved from 6 years? I beg your pardon? Dear FSK, don't think about money for a moment, think about our children, they will thank you. […] 'The Spiderwick Secrets' turned out to be a fantastic fantasy fairy tale, as expected […] The dual role is particularly good for Highmore - it portrays the two dissimilar brothers Jared and Simon convincingly. […] 'The Spiderwick Secret' is a great one Have become a strip that kids (from 12 years of age!) Will definitely have fun with. "

Gian-Philip Andreas wrote on mehrfilm.de: “Even if the 'Spiderwicks' are certainly not reinventing the fantasy genre and ultimately serving up the usual family reconciliation kit, Waters' staging has some pleasant advantages: First, the tricks are worth seeing and the story always useful, secondly, the plot does not get bogged down on superfluous sidelines, and thirdly, Freddie Highmore plays the twin lead role. As a double jack in the battle of the goblins, he actually shines brighter than last in the weird sounding Wunderkindschnulze The sound of the heart . "
