Domen Lorbek (born March 6, 1985 in Kranj , SR Slovenia ) is a Slovenian basketball player . After starting his career in his home country, the European junior champion from 2004 played in Spain and Italy in particular from 2007 . Since 2013, the World Cup and multiple European Championship finals Lorbek has been under contract with Gaziantep in Turkey . He is the younger brother of Erazem Lorbek , who as a player of FC Barcelona won the highest-ranking European club competition ULEB Euroleague 2009/10 .

Career

Lorbek comes from a well-known basketball family in Slovenia. The father of Erazem and Domen, Radovan Lorbek, most recently worked for many years as an official in the organization of the ABA League . The youngest brother Klemen (* 1988) played in the top national league and was a selection player in Slovenian youth teams. At the U18 European Championship finals in Wuerttemberg in 2002 , in which the host's German junior team took twelfth and last place, the Slovenian team around the Lorbek brothers Erazem and Domen and Saša Vujačić only lost two points in the final against Croatia . Without the Serbian-born Vujačić, it was enough at the U19 World Cup in 2003 to a seventh place, before the 2004 U20 European Junior Championship was followed by the second title win of a Slovenian selection in the third edition of this competition. In the following U21 World Cup finals, which took place for the last time in 2005, it was enough for the Slovenian selection to come in eighth without Erazem Lorbek.

After Domen Lorbek initially played in the capital Ljubljana with record champions KK Union Olimpija and with the men in his home town of Kranj, he moved to KK Helios in Domžale on the outskirts of the capital in 2004 . At that time, the club played in the ABA League , founded in 2001 , which continued the tradition of the Yugoslav YUBA league after the inclusion of Serbian teams in 2002 . After the 16th and last place in the debut in 2005 they improved to third from last place in 2006. Domen Lorbek then moved back to the record champions KK Union Olimpija, who lost his title in the Slovenian championship in 2007 in the final series against his former club from Domžale. Tied with KK Helios, KK Olimpija finished ninth in the 2007 ABA league, after having been eliminated in the top-ranking European club competition ULEB Euroleague 2006/07 after the preliminary round. At the 2007 European Championship finals , Domen Lorbek was also represented for the first time in the final squad of the Slovenian men's selection , which started the tournament excellently with five wins, including a runaway win in the second round with 77:47 over the German selection . However, this was followed by three defeats, including one point difference against Greece in the quarter-finals and the renewed clash with Germany in the placement round, so that after the final victory over France in seventh place, the direct qualification for the 2008 Olympic Games was missed.

In the 2007/08 season Domen Lorbek played for the first time abroad for the traditional club CB Estudiantes from Madrid in the Spanish ACB league . Estudiantes reached at the end of the 2008 season in 14th place in the table, but only one win separated from a relegation place, relegation. At the Olympic qualifying tournament in Athens in 2008, the Slovenian national team also missed the last chance to participate in the games in Beijing after losing to Puerto Rico . In the 2008/09 season Lorbek was then active in the Italian Lega Basket Serie A for Benetton from Treviso . The former European top club was financially weak and had missed the play-offs for the Italian championship twice in a row, but at the end of the 2009 season it was enough for fourth place and the semi-finals in the Italian championship. In the Eurocup 2008/09 they were the only Italian team to host the Final 8 tournament in Turin , but they lost against the eventual title winner Lietuvos rytas Vilnius in the quarter-finals. At the European Championship finals in 2009 , the national team under national coach Jurij Zdovc just missed a medal in fourth place after three wins in the intermediate round and the quarter-final victory over Croatia . At the beginning of the 2009/10 season Lorbek was again active in the ACB league at Cajasol in Seville , but after the end of his contract at the end of November 2009 he first moved back to KK Helios in his home country, before signing a new contract in Spain with Lagun Aro in February 2010 Gipuzkoa BC got from San Sebastian . The team achieved safe relegation in 14th place, while his brother Erazem won not only the Spanish championship with FC Barcelona, but also the Euroleague of that season. At the 2010 World Cup , however, both brothers were not represented in the national team of coach Memi Bečirović . With Lagun Aro GBC Domen Lorbek confirmed in 2011 the 14th place from the previous year in the ACB league.

In the 2011/12 season, Domen Lorbek only got a contract with the former Italian cup winner Felice Scandone from Avellino in Campania in early November 2011 . But after an injury, Lorbek was out of action before the contract was terminated after three months at the end of January 2012. After this messed up season, Lorbek defended the 2013 national championship in his Slovenian homeland with the KK Krka from Novo mesto and won his first personal club championship in the men's category. He then returned to the national team, from which his brother Erazem had already resigned. At the 2013 European Championship finals , Slovenia hosted Božidar Maljković , but after defeating eventual title winners France in the quarter-finals, they only managed to finish fifth after two wins in the placement round. For the 2013/14 season Lorbek moved to the Türkiye Basketbol Ligi , where his compatriot Jurij Zdovc worked as the club coach of Royal Halı from Gaziantep . The previous year's climber also took part in the EuroChallenge 2013/14 , in which they reached the Final Four tournament, in which they were defeated in the semifinals by the host and later title winner Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia and could only achieve third place. After finishing ninth as a promoted player in the previous season, it was enough for tenth place in 2014 and 2015, where they narrowly missed out on the play-offs for the championship. As national coach, Zdovc took his club player Lorbek back to the 2014 World Cup , where they lost to Lithuania in the final group game after leading at half time . So they met the defending champions United States in the quarter-finals , who were clearly defeated with 76: 119. Lorbek initially reached an agreement to extend his contract with Gaziantep, but after not participating with the national team in the 2015 European Championship finals, he has so far been without a club in the 2015/16 season.
