Donald Quarrie ( Donald O'Riley "Don" Quarrie ; born February 25, 1951 in Kingston ) is a former Jamaican sprinter and Olympic champion .
As a 17-year-old Quarrie was a member of the Jamaican Olympic team in 1968, but was unable to participate due to a training injury. In 1969 he received a scholarship from the University of Nebraska and moved to the United States .
At the British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in 1970 , he won the gold medal in the 100-meter run ahead of Lennox Miller (JAM) and Hasely Crawford (TRI) and the gold medal in the 200-meter run ahead of Edwin Roberts (TRI) and Charles Asati (KEN ).
A year later he repeated this double success at the Pan American Games in Cali , where he broke the world record set by Tommie Smith over 200 meters on August 3, 1971 with 19.86 s . At the British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch in 1974 , he again won the gold medal in the 100-meter run, ahead of John Mwebi (KEN) and Ohene Karikari (GHA), and the gold medal in the 200-meter run ahead of George Daniels (GHA) and Bevan Smith (NZL). At the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton in 1978 , he won the 100 meter gold medal again from Allan Wells (GBR) and Hasely Crawford.
At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montréal , he won the silver medal in the 100-meter run, behind Hasely Crawford and in front of Walerij Borsow (URS), and the gold medal in the 200-meter run in front of Millard Hampton and Dwayne Evans (both USA). At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , he won the bronze medal in the 200-meter run, behind Pietro Mennea (ITA) and Allan Wells (GBR). In his last participation in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , he won the silver medal in the 4 x 100 meter relay along with his teammates Albert Lawrence , Greg Meghoo and Raymond Stewart , behind the team from the United States and in front of the Team from Canada .
