Eduard von Stoesser

Karl Eduard Christian von Stoesser (born November 7, 1791 in Prussian Holland , † June 16, 1861 in Glogau ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and commander of the 9th division .

Life

origin

Eduard was a son of the Prussian Colonel Karl Philipp von Stoesser (1749-1822) and his wife Henriette, née von Dobenck († 1821). His father was last as a commander in the infantry regiment "von Reinhardt" and was a knight of the order Pour le Mérite .

Military career

Stoesser joined the Prussian Army on May 1, 1805 as a private corporal and was employed in his father's infantry regiment. As an ensign he took part in the defense of Danzig during the Fourth Coalition War. At the beginning of April 1807, Stoesser was promoted to Second Lieutenant and on July 3, 1813, as Prime Lieutenant, Adjutant of the 9th Brigade. During the wars of liberation he was besieging Erfurt . In the battle of Großgörschen he acquired the Iron Cross, 2nd class. Stoesser fought near Bautzen , Dresden and received the Order of St. Vladimir IV Class and the Iron Cross First Class for his behavior near Leipzig . The following year he fought at Laon and Paris and rose to staff captain on April 8, 1814 . In 1815 he fought in the Battle of Waterloo and was transferred to the 18th Infantry Regiment on April 10, 1815 as captain and company commander .

He was promoted to major on June 18, 1824 and was in command of the 2nd Battalion in the 7th Landwehr Regiment from late March 1825 to late March 1834. This was followed by his transfer to the 10th Infantry Regiment and on March 30, 1838 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel . He was then commissioned on March 30, 1839, initially to lead the 22nd Infantry Regiment , and on January 28, 1840, Stoesser was appointed regiment commander and on March 30, 1840, he was promoted to colonel. On October 17, 1844, he was transferred to the 9th Landwehr Brigade as commander and promoted to major general on March 31, 1846 . On October 20, 1849 he was then commander of the 3rd Division in Stettin and on April 19, 1851 promoted to lieutenant general. On November 4, 1851, Stoesser took over the 9th Division in Glogau. In this position, King Friedrich Wilhelm IV awarded him the Order of the Red Eagle First Class with Oak Leaves on April 21, 1855 , before he retired on May 19, 1855 with a pension . He died on June 16, 1861 in Glogau.

family

Stoesser married Luise von Dobschütz (1800–1878) on September 12, 1820 in Rackschütz . She was the daughter of the landscape director and district administrator of the Neumark district Otto Ferdinand von Debschütz (* 1763). The marriage resulted in six children, but only two of them reached adulthood . The daughter Thekla (1821–1874) married Wilhelm von Brandenstein (1819–1894), Privy Councilor and Senate President in 1848 ; their son Guido (1826–1896) married Therese Stein von Kamienski (1836–1911), a daughter of Major General Friedrich Stein von Kaminski , in 1854 .
