Ferdinand Wilhelm Alexander Edwin Werckmeister , called Werckmeister von Oesterling since 1883 (born May 26, 1832 in Hönow , † February 2, 1912 in Charlottenburg ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Edwin was the son of Ferdinand Rudolf Werckmeister (1791-1860) and his wife Adelheid, née von Oesterling (1794-1844). His father was Herr auf Hönow until 1839 and then Herr auf Zowen and Zirchow until 1856.

Military career

Werckmeister attended high schools in Köslin and Neustettin . On November 1, 1851, he joined the 9th Hussar Regiment of the Prussian Army . Promoted to secondary lieutenant , he was transferred to the 8th Uhlan Regiment at the beginning of November 1853 and attended the General War School from October 1857 to the end of September 1860 . This command was briefly interrupted in 1859 by mobilization on the occasion of the Sardinian War . In the meantime promoted to prime lieutenant, Werckmeister was then assigned to the war school in Neisse as an inspection officer and riding instructor . In position à la suite of his regiment, he became a teacher at the Engers War School at the end of October 1862 and in this capacity was promoted to Rittmeister in February 1865 . On July 10, 1865, he returned to the service with the appointment of squadron chief. During the war against Austria in 1866 Werckmeister led his 3rd squadron in the battles near Trautenau , Tobitschau and Königgrätz .

In the war against France , Werckmeister led his squadron in 1870/71 in the battle of Gravelotte , the siege of Metz and the battles at Flanville, Varennes, Château-Renault and Blois . Awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class and the Knight's Cross 1st Class of the Order of the Zähringer Löwen and the Order of the Württemberg Crown with Swords, he became major after the peace treaty at the end of August 1871 . Under position à la suite, Werckmeister was in command of the 2nd Uhlan Regiment No. 20 from December 14, 1871 to September 22, 1873 as a regular staff officer in Württemberg . As a lieutenant colonel , Werckmeister was entrusted with the command of the Rhenish Uhlan Regiment No. 7 on April 22, 1877 and was appointed regimental commander on June 21, 1877. In this position he was promoted to colonel in mid-October 1881 , and the regiment chief Friedrich I honored him by awarding him Commander II class of the Order of the Zähringer Lion.

He was on 14 April 1883 as a "Werckmeister called Oesterling" by under settling the name and parts of his mother's arms Wilhelm I to the hereditary Prussian nobility raised .

On December 4, 1884, Werckmeister was placed à la suite of his regiment and appointed commander of the 1st Cavalry Brigade in Königsberg . In this position, promoted to major general on March 8, 1887 , Werckmeister received the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves , in mid-September 1887 . family

Werckmeister married Mathilde Queißer (1847–1925) on December 27, 1868 in Lauban . The son Fritz (1877–1890) emerged from the marriage.
