Egon Ramms (born September 21, 1948 in Datteln , Westphalia ) is a retired general . D. of the Army of the German Armed Forces and was Commander-in-Chief of the Allied Joint Force Command in Brunssum from January 26, 2007 to September 29, 2010 . He was thus one of the highest-ranking German soldiers in NATO .

Military career

Training and first uses

Ramms joined the Bundeswehr on October 1, 1968, initially for three years as an officer candidate ( temporary soldier ). He first served in the repair battalion 470 in Unna . With an obligation period of initially 12 years, he went through officer training from 1968 to 1971 at the Technical Troops School I in Aachen and at the Army Officer School I in Hanover . In 1971 he began his studies as a lieutenant in Darmstadt , which he completed in 1975 as a graduate engineer for mechanical engineering with a specialization in car engine and tank construction. From 1975 he was then employed as a maintenance officer in the maintenance company 70 in Stade . In the same year he was promoted to captain , later appointed company commander of this company and used as such until 1978. From 1978 to 1980 Ramms was employed as a maintenance officer in the G4 staff department of the 3rd Panzer Division in Buxtehude .

Service as a staff officer

From 1980 to 1982 he completed the general staff course at the command academy of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg , after which he was appointed major and served for the next two years until 1984 as an operations officer (G3) of the 6th Panzer Grenadier Division in Neumünster . He was then used for another two years as Chief of Staff and G3 of Homeland Security Brigade 51 in Eutin . From 1986 to 1988 Lieutenant Colonel Ramms was employed as a consultant for arms control and disarmament in the command staff of the armed forces (Fü S III 5) in the Federal Ministry of Defense in Bonn .

In 1988 he took over a troop command for two years with the repair battalion 120 in Rheine . In 1990 he returned to the Ministry of Defense in Bonn, where he served as Head of Division I 7 in the Army Command (Fü HI 7) while being promoted to Colonel . From 1990 to 1992 he was a consultant in the office of the State Secretary for Procurement. In this role he was responsible for armaments and logistics for the army and the air force . He then served from 1992 to 1994 under State Secretary Jörg Schönbohm and was appointed director for armaments issues, and from 1994 to 1996 he was part of the army command staff.

Service as a general

In 1996, Ramms was appointed Brigadier General for two and a half years in command of Logistics Brigade 1 in Lingen (Ems) , before returning to a staff position in 1998, this time as the deputy head of the logistics, infrastructure and environmental protection department in the Armed Forces (Fü SV). From 2000 to 2004 Major General Ramms was then transferred to the post of Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces Staff . He handed this position over to Wolfram Kühn .

On February 18, 2004, Lieutenant General Ramms took over command of the Multinational Corps Northeast in Stettin , which he held until December 15, 2006 and handed it over to the Polish Lieutenant General Zdzisław Goral . Then Ramm was in the Netherlands offset, where he on 26 January 2007 by General Gerhard Back command of the Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum of NATO in Brunssum took over.

In this position, Ramms was subordinate to the then NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe , US General Bantz J. Craddock , and was in turn superior to US General and ISAF Commander David D. McKiernan . Different views on warfare and the fight against drugs in Afghanistan led to conflicts on the political level. Until his retirement, Ramms was the superior of five ISAF commanders and served within the NATO command structure itself, first under US General Craddock and finally under US Admiral James G. Stavridis .

On September 29, 2010, Ramms handed over the Brunssum command to General Wolf-Dieter Langheld and retired on September 30, 2010 himself.

Orders and decorations

Egon Ramms is among other things bearer of the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany , the Cross of Honor of the Bundeswehr in silver and gold and the Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland .

Private

Ramms is married and has two children. He is the son of the FDP politician and member of the Bundestag Egon Wilhelm Ramm .
