Former phone code (Switzerland)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article covers the history and origin of the telephone prefixes in Switzerland .

When calling from abroad ( international phone code +41 for Switzerland), the 0 of today's phone number, in which the area code has been integrated, must be omitted (e.g. 044 824 71 11 becomes +41 44 824 71 11 ).

The international dialing code starts in Switzerland with 00 or + .

History of the telephone number and the area code in Switzerland

At the beginning of the telephone age, with the establishment of the first switchboard in Zurich in 1880 and 1881 in Basel and Bern , the connections were made using manually operated plug connections in the switchboards. So at that time you didn't have a telephone number, but a wire directly to the switchboard, where the connection to a second device was switched with plug connections, which was only released when the connection was established. To dial the switchboard, a crank was used to induce a voltage on the telephone set, which triggered a buzzer and a visual display in the switchboard. Used came flaps cabinets .

The first interurban connection between Zurich and Winterthur in 1883 was also fully established by the operating staff via the two telephone exchanges.

Telephone numbers were only issued with the first semi-automatic switchboard in Zurich in 1917 . The call still had to be answered and transferred by someone. This did not apply until 1922, when the first fully automatic telephone exchange was set up in Switzerland.

However, this control center could only automatically connect the connections located in its catchment area. For long-distance connections you still had to call the switchboard (colloquially "the office") and request a conversation with the location and number. For example: "I would like to have Mr. Meier in Bern with the number 3454." The connection between the two central units and, accordingly, between the two connections was then established. Since this way of working was labor-intensive and expensive, the control centers were assigned their own numbers, which were used when a call went outside the area of the own control center. The area code was born. To keep the dialing process short, it was set up in such a way that the 0 as the first dialed digit of the own central unit indicated that another central unit was desired.

The fully automatic dial-in from all telephones and exchanges was only possible in 1959, when the automatic telephone exchanges were introduced across Switzerland.

Including the area code in the phone number - 2002

For a telephone connection between two connections within the same area code, the area code had to be left out for a long time.

Since March 29, 2002 the area code has to be dialed. This became necessary because the localization of the area code has been canceled since that day. This means that you can now keep your telephone number (including the area code) if you move your residence to another region. However, this must be requested.

The aim was for all telephone connections across Switzerland to have a nine-digit number (the 0 is not counted as it does not belong to the actual number, but is only necessary for the dial-in procedure). This has been achieved since April 1, 2007, when Zurich was the last region to remove the 01 area code (new 044 for older numbers or for all earlier 01 area codes, 043 for newly assigned numbers, especially during the changeover from 01 to 044).

The spelling has been retained - example: 044 444 44 44 (3 digits of the old area code, 7 of the old telephone number ).

Lists of area codes and short numbers

The lists negotiate the use of the area code. Since March 29, 2002 the area code is no longer tied to a specific location.

Telephone codes for Switzerland

The list shows the regions as of 2002, since then the area code has been part of the telephone number. The last big change was the abolition of the 01 area code, the reason for this being that all telephone numbers (except abbreviated dialing numbers) in Switzerland must have nine digits.

01 (repealed)

  • 01 Zurich region - functional until March 1, 2007. This area code was created from the former area code 051 in order to enable 7-digit telephone numbers without increasing the total number of digits. From March 1, 2004 it was replaced by 044 for previous private telephone numbers. The changeover happened in 3 steps: 1.) From March 1st, 2004 all numbers with the area code 01 could also be dialed with the area code 044. 2.) Until March 2005, calls from the Zurich area appeared on the telephone display with the area code 01. From March 2005, the area code 044 was displayed on the telephone display. 3.) In March 2007 the area code 01 disappeared for good. As in the rest of Switzerland, the telephone and fax connections of the previous network group 01 now have ten digits. All new private telephone connections will have the 043 area code. The 01 area code has been removed so that speed dialing numbers can also be dialed from abroad without blocking a large number range. Example: 162 (weather) is +41 162 from abroad, which would correspond to a number from the former area code 01 for the Zurich region (central group 62x). As a result, all numbers following the pattern "01 62x xx xx" would become "+41 1 62x xx xx" - and thus coincide with the weather forecast. For calls from abroad, the dialing starts as follows: +41 44 xxx xx xx
