history

Apron of the boiler house

In 1939 the Deutsche Reichsbahn decided to expand the Strasshof station due to the increased volume of traffic on the northern line . Four water cranes, two turntables for turning the locomotives, three rectangular halls, four coal elevators and four slag elevators were planned for the final construction; When construction began in 1944, however, the project was no longer relevant due to the fact that the Wehrmacht had long since begun to withdraw from the Second World War .

After the end of the Second World War in 1945, the building project could only be completed in 1947 by the newly established state-owned ÖBB ; the building site was now in the Soviet-occupied zone of Austria. Four water cranes, a turntable and two coal lifts were realized from the original plans. Instead of the planned three halls, only a rectangular boiler house was built.

As a result of the changed traffic conditions after the Second World War (see Iron Curtain, among others ), the facility soon seemed oversized and was therefore used early on to park damaged and obsolete locomotives and later scrap them. The last scheduled steam locomotives of the Republic of Austria were used by the Strasshof train company until December 31, 1976, although the northern line had been electrically operated with S-Bahn operations to Gänserndorf since the early 1960s .

In 1978 the facility was finally closed and it was only thanks to the great efforts of the 1st ÖSEK ("1st Austrian Tram and Railway Club") that the hall and the track apron could be retained as a parking space for the numerous museum vehicles and the demolition prevented.

In 1984, the Strasshof Railway Museum was opened on the site of the 1. ÖSEK and was given the name "Das Heizhaus". A large part of the collection of the Austrian Railway Museum belonged to the supervised vehicles from the beginning . In 1987, Strasshof was the venue for the celebrations on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the railway in Austria . The Railway Museum took on the role of an active railway depot again for a few weeks, when practically all of Austria's normal-gauge steam locomotives and numerous international guest locomotives that were operational at the time were gathered here for vehicle parades.

In 1999, a large part of the railway vehicles from the railway collection of the Technical Museum in Vienna was taken over for care; some of these vehicles were returned to Vienna in 2006. They were originally intended to be exhibited in a newly built extension to the Technical Museum. These were:
Steam locomotives : Ajax , Ilse , Steinbrück , Licaon , 180.01 , 33.102 , 178.84 , Gaisbergbahn 1 , Schafbergbahn 999.105 , kkStB 1.20 (cut- away model)
Electric locomotives : 1060.01 , 1045.14 , 4030.210
Wagons : Cu 9424
After cancellation of the funds already promised The situation of these vehicles was unclear for this extension by the responsible Federal Ministry for Science and Research in the summer of 2007. Schafbergbahn 999.105 has been awarded to Salzkammergutbahn GmbH since August 2007. The Ilse locomotive was set up as an eye-catcher not far from the main building of the Technical Museum and has been in the Schwechat Railway Museum since the end of 2009 . The exhibits "Ajax", "Steinbrück", Cu 9424 and 1060 have been on display since November 2008 in the main building of the Technical Museum in Vienna. The other vehicles were given to the Südbahnmuseum in Mürzzuschlag , the Sigmundsherberg Railway Museum and the Schwechat Railway Museum. The 33.102 was transferred to Strasshof in August 2008, "Licaon" followed in October 2008.

The “Heizhaus” has been taking part in the Long Night of the Museums since 2007. From 2009 to 2019 the museum also carried the Austrian Museum Seal of Approval .

Current situation

In 2010 around 80 locomotives (some of them fully operational) and over 180 wagons were on display . The entire ambience around the exhibited items has also been preserved in the original, including the wooden water tower, the coal lifts and water cranes , some of which have been renovated and are available to operate the locomotives. The turntable with a diameter of 23 m was designed only to turn the large steam locomotives and originally only had a single siding. The access to the vehicle hall with a rectangular floor plan is via large switch connections. From Strasshof, especially in the summer months, nostalgia trips are carried out both on the extensive railway area and on other railway lines.

In 2010, heavy damage was caused by non-ferrous metal thieves. In March 2011, the museum was hit by vandals, of which 27 historic vehicles were damaged. The damage amounted to around 20,000 euros.

Model trains

In Strasshof there are several model railroad layouts of the 7,25 ", 5", IIm, S, H0, N tracks.

  • There is a garden railway with the gauges 7.25 "and 5",
  • a system in size IIm behind the garden railway.
  • The N-layout, originally the Immenstadt model railway , or subsequently the Oberallgäu model railway , is located in a railway wagon by the garden railway .
  • The model railway system of the model railway club Strasshof, which is about the boiler house and its surroundings in size H0, is housed in an adjoining building.
  • To the left of the entrance you can find several H0 motifs in an auxiliary building that invite you to drive yourself and depict different sections of Austrian railways. For example, sections have been built based on the model of the Vienna Stadtbahn or the Mariazeller Bahn .
  • Also one of the oldest S-gauge layouts in Europe from 1938.
