El Centro is a city in the US state of California . It is the county seat of Imperial County , has around 42,000 inhabitants (as of the 2010 census ) and was formally founded in 1908. The urban area covers an area of 32.6 square kilometers.
The city is easily accessible from Interstate 8 , Highway 86, and Highway 111 . El Centro is about 180 kilometers east of San Diego and 350 kilometers southeast of Los Angeles in southern Imperial County. The border with Mexico is only ten kilometers away.
Demographics
According to the 2010 census, the population was around 42,500, with the largest proportion being Latinos . However, whites of European descent are also relatively well represented, but significantly less than in California or the rest of the USA. Asians and Afro-Americans are minorities, each making up less than five percent of the population. The 2010 census also registered around 13,000 households in the city. For every 100 women there were 94.7 men, while the median age of the population was 31.8 years.
Overall, the number of inhabitants had risen by more than 5000 since 2000, which is due in particular to the high influx of immigrants from the Hispanic region.

El Centro and the entire region are known for their hot summer climate. The average daily temperature in the summer months of July and August is often 40 degrees. The highest measured temperature was 50 degrees. The rainfall is concentrated mainly in the winter months, however, the failure usually very mild. In contrast, the summer months are characterized by periods of low precipitation.
