Emil Wilhelm Frommel (born January 5, 1828 in Karlsruhe , † November 9, 1896 in Plön ) was a German Protestant theologian and folk writer, poet, court preacher , military chief pastor and educator of the imperial princes in Plön.

Life

Emil Wilhelm Frommel, eldest son of the painter Karl Ludwig Frommel and the pastor's daughter Jeanne Henriette Gambs, studied theology in Halle , Erlangen and Heidelberg . During his studies he became a member of the Fürstenthal Halle fraternity in 1846/47 , the Marcomannia Erlangen fraternity in 1848 and the Germania Heidelberg fraternity in 1848/50 . In 1848 he took part in the revolutionary riots as a fraternity member , but later distanced himself from it. He became an honorary member of the Alemannia fraternity on the plow hall and in 1894 of the Germania Halle fraternity . In the years 1850-1852 he held the office of vicar in Altlußheim near Heidelberg . After almost a year of wandering through Italy with his brother Max , he was given the parish office in Altlußheim until November 1854. He was then appointed court and city vicar in Karlsruhe and in 1861 city pastor. In 1864 he became pastor in Barmen at the old church in Wupperfeld . Here, in 1866, Frommel founded one of the first mixed church choirs in the German-speaking area, the later Wupperfeld Kantorei .

In 1869 Frommel was appointed pastor to the garrison church in Berlin .

In the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 he took part as a field preacher under General August von Werder . He was a field division pastor in Strasbourg for over six months and returned to Berlin on June 16, 1871.

In 1872 he was appointed court chaplain and chief military pastor of the imperial guard corps in Berlin . He accompanied Kaiser Wilhelm I 14 times to his spa stay in Bad Gastein.

Half a year after his 25th anniversary in office at the Garrison Church in Berlin, he had to undergo a serious operation. Badly weakened by this, he asked for his release and went to Plön to recover . After two more operations in Plön, he died and was buried in Berlin in the old garrison cemetery.

Besides numerous sermons and the contribution to the church history of Baden from the life of Dr. A. Henhöfer (Barmen 1865) as well as the text Von der Kunst im Daily Leben (Barmen 1867) he published a number of popular writings which made him famous for their piety, language and humor. Emil Frommel founded the yearbook Neue Christoterpe (Christian joy ) in 1879 together with Rudolf Kögel and Wilhelm Baur . Between 1929 and 1973 a short street behind the garrison church in Berlin bore his name. At the former parsonage of the garrison church ("Frommelhaus") in today's Anna-Louisa-Karsch-Strasse 9 in Berlin-Mitte there is a memorial plaque for Emil Frommel.

On August 25, 1853, Frommel married Amalie Bähr (1833–1915), the daughter of the Ministerial Council of the Protestant church section in Karlsruhe, Karl Bähr . The couple had their son Otto , who later also became a theologian, and two daughters. His son-in-law Johannes Kessler (1865–1944), husband of their younger daughter Maria, was court preacher and prince educator at the garrison church in Potsdam before moving to the Lukaskirche in Dresden in 1908 . Another son-in-law, husband of the older daughter Elisabeth, was the archaeologist Christian Hülsen .

Emil Frommel was the brother of the Lutheran theologian Max Frommel and the painter Otto Frommel , cousin and adoptive brother of the painter Karl Lindemann-Frommel and the grandson of the preacher Christian Carl Gambs . The theologian Otto Frommel , father of the writer Wolfgang Frommel and the composer Gerhard Frommel , was a distant relative.
