chronology
- It burns so nicely SOS - Save Olli Schulz

It burns so beautiful is the first solo album by the German singer and guitarist Olli Schulz . It was released on March 13, 2009 by Columbia Berlin ( Sony ).

Emergence

Together with Max Schröder , Olli Schulz had released a total of three albums as Olli Schulz and the dog Marie between 2003 and 2006. Since Schröder was now a permanent member of Tomte's band as a drummer and the band was just on the tour for their album Heureka , Schulz recorded It burns so nicely on his own.

As with the previous Olli-Schulz-und-der-Hund-Marie album Waiting for the Boomerang , Schulz engaged the producers Moses Schneider ( Tocotronic , Beatsteaks ) and Swen Meyer ( Tomte , Kettcar ), who each took about half of the titles recorded and produced. Schneider was also involved in the recordings as a bass player .

Since Schulz did not have a band of his own at the time of recording, he used the services of various studio and guest musicians . The singer-songwriters Gisbert zu Knyphausen , Bernd Begemann , Lee Buddah and Mark Tavassol ( Wir sind Helden ) can be heard on the album .

"Do the Bibo"

Schulz received a lot of attention with the title “Mach den Bibo”. The piece's nonsense refrain is about various characters from Sesame Street , and Schulz invented a dance for this. In the accompanying music video has doctors -Schlagzeuger Bela B a cameo , also the band's Muff Potter to see.

In the run-up to the publication of Esbrennt so schön , Olli Schulz competed with the title at the Bundesvision Song Contest 2009 for his hometown Hamburg and took 5th place. Schulz was criticized for this from various quarters and assumed purely commercial interests. He himself contradicted this view, he just wanted to achieve as much airplay and a summer hit as possible. At the Bundesvision Song Contest, Schulz jokingly stated that he wrote “Mach den Bibo” because he was of the opinion that “someone with a school leaving certificate” should have a Ballermann hit one day.

Looking back, Schulz said in an interview that “Mach den Bibo” was “a kind of liberation”. On the one hand, he can now "basically do what I want", on the other hand, he was represented in the German single charts for the first time, which has made him more popular.

It Burns So Nice received mixed to positive reviews.

The music magazine Visions called Es brennt So schön , especially with regard to the lyrics and choice of topics, as a "varied [es]" album. The “good mood song” “Mach den Bibo” stands in stark contrast to the otherwise serious and thoughtful rest of the album.

Laut.de also praised the "ambitious lyrics" and the "powerful sound" created by the cast. As a result, however, the album lacks dynamism , only on the second half of the record are there quiet pieces.

The magazine Intro called Es brennt a “dark, atmospheric concept album”, only “Mach den Bibo” “tear up” this mood. In terms of sound, the absence of partner Max Schröder is hardly noticeable, as before, a “band sound” predominates.

In commercial terms, Es brennt so schön was Olli Schulz's most successful album to date. The record itself rose to number 46 in the German album charts , "Mach den Bibo" reached number 38 in the single charts.
