Stefan Espeland (born March 24, 1989 in Oslo ) is a Norwegian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Eisbären Berlin in the DEL since March 2020 .
Career
Stefan Espeland began his career as an ice hockey player in Manglerud Star's youth team . In 2005 he moved to Linköpings HC in Sweden, for whose junior teams he was active until 2007. The defender then moved to MODO Hockey within Sweden , for which he made his debut in the Elitserien in the 2007/08 season . He came to two missions in which he remained pointless and punished. During the following season , the Norwegian junior national player received significantly more ice time in the Elitserien and played a total of 15 games, but again failed to score points and, as in the previous year, mainly played with the U20 juniors from MODO Hockey.
Espeland spent the 2009/10 season on loan in his Norwegian homeland. With Vålerenga Ishockey from the GET-ligaen he was runner-up. In 58 games he was able to score three goals and give 13 assists. For the 2010/11 season MODO Hockey gave him to IF Sundsvall Hockey from HockeyAllsvenskan , the second Swedish division. For the 2011/12 season he moved within the second Swedish division to Borås HC . However, he returned to Vålerenga in December 2012, where he played until 2015, and in 2014 he achieved the best plus / minus balance in the GET leagues. He then joined Lørenskog IK , with whom he was runner-up in Norway in 2016, like three times before with Vålerenga. He himself was elected to the league's all-star team that season. He was re-elected to the All-Star Team in 2017 after providing the most assists in the season. He then moved to Tampereen Ilves in the Finnish Liiga , but left the club again in December and joined the Klagenfurt AC from the Austrian ice hockey league . In February 2018 he returned to Vålerenga again.
In the 2019/20 season, the Norwegian international played for the Fischtown Pinguins in the German Ice Hockey League . After Stefan Espeland ended the season as the second strongest defender on points, he moved to Eisbären Berlin with his teammate Mark Zengerle .
International
For Norway, Espeland took part in the junior division of the U18 World Junior Championships in the top division in 2006 , the U18 World Junior Championships in Division I in 2007 and the U20 Junior World Championships in Division I in 2008 and 2009 . At the Junior World Championships, he scored a total of five goals in 21 games and provided nine assists.
With the Norwegian men's selection , he played in the top division at the 2014 and 2015 World Championships . He also represented his colors in the Olympic qualification for the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang .
