Ferdinand Schmitz (born October 14, 1919 in Cologne ; † November 6, 1981 ) was a former German wrestler .

Career

Ferdinand Schmitz, also known as "Bubi", grew up in Cologne and got into wrestling through his older half-brother Heinrich Nettesheim . He made unusually rapid progress and won his first German championship title at the age of 18 in 1938, ahead of the 1936 Olympic third party Johannes Herbert . He won medals at the European Championships in 1938 and 1939 before the war and the post-war period interrupted his international career for 12 years. Ferdinand Schmitz was certainly the greatest German wrestling talent around 1939. In January 1940 in Copenhagen in an international match against Denmark was shoulder winner over Eigil Johansen. He also showed how talented he was in 1941 when he defeated Olympic champion Kustaa Pihlajamäki in Nuremberg in March 1941 in an international match against Finland . It was not until 1951 that he was able to start again at an international championship. However, it turned out that the 12-year hiatus was too long for the German wrestlers. International wrestling had continued to develop. It was difficult to reconnect.

Ferdinand Schmitz was an employee of the Reichsbahn and Bundesbahn and, along with Heinrich Nettesheim and Georg Pulheim, was part of the very successful team of ESV Olympia Köln for years.
