Wilhelm Ferdinand von Schack (born November 18, 1787 in Magdeburg , † July 23, 1846 in Treten ) was the Prussian major general and commander of the 7th Cavalry Brigade as well as the heir to stepping in the district of Rummelsburg i. Pom.

Life

origin

Wilhelm comes from the Müssen branch of the Lüneburg nobility of the Lords of Schack . He was the eldest son of the Prussian major general Wilhelm Georg von Schack (1752-1827) and his wife Auguste Elisabeth Henriette, née von Borcke (1764-1830). His brothers were Major General Wilhelm von Schack , General of the Infantry and Herr auf Stechau Hans Wilhelm von Schack (1791–1866) and Major General August von Schack (1793–1864). His brother-in-law were Major General Florian von Seydlitz (1777–1832) and the court marshal of Prince Wilhelm of Prussia, Hans Karl Dietrich von Rochow (1791–1857). His cousin and close friend was Johann Georg Emil von Brause .

Military career

Schack visited the cadet houses in Kalisch and Berlin as well as the Academie militaire . On February 1, 1802, he was employed as a private corporal in the "Louis Ferdinand" infantry regiment of the Prussian Army and on September 20, 1806, with a patent from April 10, 1805, he was promoted to ensign. In the First Coalition War he took part in the Battle of Auerstedt and was captured by the surrender of Magdeburg. After the war, on May 14, 1807, he became Premier Lieutenant in Hussar Regiment No. 8 , but received his resignation as Rittmeister on October 8, 1811 .

Shortly before the start of the Wars of Liberation , Schack returned to the army on March 12, 1813 and joined the East Prussian National Cavalry Regiment . He fought at Katzbach , Leipzig , Laon , Paris , Goldberg, Löwenberg and Bunzlau. Schack took part in the transition at Wartenburg and the battles at Freyburg , Eisenach, Saint Dizier , Chalons, Soissons , Coulommieres and Sezanne. During that time, he became staff cavalry officer on April 18, 1814, for Katzbach he received the Iron Cross 2nd class and for Coulommiers the Cross 1st class.

On February 21, 1815, he was transferred to the Guard Hussar Regiment . There he was on June 7, 1815 Rittmeister and on August 26, 1815 squadron chief . On March 28, 1819 he was transferred to the 3rd Dragoon Regiment as a major and as a regular staff officer . On March 30, 1833, he was commissioned to lead the 8th Uhlan Regiment . He was promoted to lieutenant colonel on March 30, 1834, and was appointed regimental commander. In the same capacity, Schack was active in the 5th Hussar Regiment from January 29, 1836 to April 6, 1842 and in the meantime advanced to colonel at the end of April . On April 7, 1842 he was promoted to major general and appointed commander of the 7th Cavalry Brigade. Under awarded the Red Eagle II. Class with oak leaves Schack received his on August 14, 1843 farewell with board . He died on July 23, 1846 on his estate.
