Franz Grundträger (born September 27, 1937 in Trier ) is a German opera singer ( baritone ). He was awarded the title of Kammersänger both in Austria and in Hamburg on the occasion of his twenty years with the State Opera there in 1986.

Life

Franz Grundhub grew up in Trier-Biewer and graduated from the Max-Planck-Gymnasium there in 1959. He then signed up for three years in the German Air Force, attended the officers' school in Munich and was finally stationed in Hamburg.

After studying in Hamburg , a two-year scholarship at Indiana University in Bloomington (Indiana) with lessons from en: Margaret Harshaw and a summer at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara (County) , he was engaged at the Hamburg State Opera in 1966 , at which he made his debut on October 27, 1966 as one of the six Flemish deputies in Verdi's Don Carlo . He was a member of their ensemble until 1988 and has continued to work as a freelancer since then. Grundhub interpreted around 150 roles there (75 of which were first specialist roles) and participated in ten world premieres. In 1986 he was appointed Hamburger Kammersänger , and on the occasion of his 40th stage anniversary in 2006 he was made an honorary member of the house. On February 1, 2012, Grundträger sang his 2000th performance at the Hamburg State Opera; on the occasion of his 50th stage anniversary, the performance of Hansel and Gretel on December 26, 2016 was dedicated to him.

He made his debut at the Vienna State Opera on December 11, 1976 as Figaro under Horst Stein in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro. After a performance by Moses and Aron on March 16, 2010, Grundhub was made an honorary member of the Vienna State Opera , where he continues to this day (Status: 2017/18 season) works as a singer. He made his debut at the Theater an der Wien in December 2012 as Riedinger in Mathis der Mahler .

Franz Grundhaber's career took him to all the major opera houses in the world. He has a broad repertoire , ranging from bel canto to verismo to operas by modern composers. An interview in Klassik heute in February 2010 mentions the roles with which he achieved world fame and to which he feels particularly connected : Wozzeck , Barak in Die Frau ohne Schatten and Simon Boccanegra as well as Germont in La traviata , Rigoletto , Macbeth , Jago in Otello , Amonasro in Aida , Amfortas in Parsifal , The Flying Dutchman , Scarpia in Tosca , Jochanaan in Salome , Orestes in Elektra and Dr. Nice in Lulu .

Franz Grundhaber lives in Hamburg-Rissen, married to his second wife Angelika.

In 2002 at the Salzburg Festival he sang the role of Jupiter in Die Liebe der Danae, which has always been transposed down by a semitone since the premiere, as the first baritone in the high original key.

Despite his international career, Franz Grundträger remained connected to his hometown. In the 2003/2004 season he appeared as Scarpia at the Stadttheater Trier . In the 2005/2006 season he was there in Richard Wagner's Fliegendem Holländer . In 2007 he made his debut there as a director and directed Berg's Wozzeck , where he also sang the lead role in several performances; on September 17, 2017, he sang the role of the Flying Dutchman in a semi-staged performance there a few days before his 80th birthday .

Franz Grundträger is also regularly available for choir concerts in his hometown. He has special connections to the choirs in the Trier-Biewer and Trier-Ehrang districts .

He is also connected to his adopted home of Hamburg. There he supported the Sülldorf / Rissen Kantorei on 11/12. November 2006 at the performance of Elias by Mendelssohn Bartholdy as well as in November 2013 with the Brahms Requiem and in November 2014 with Dvořák's Stabat Mater .

In 2015 Franz Grundträger returned to the New York Metropolitan Opera as Schigolch in Lulu ; In 2017 he was u. a. as Moses in Moses and Aron , as Barak in Die Frau ohne Schatten , as a Dutchman in The Flying Dutchman , as Schigolch in Lulu and as Peter Besenbinder in Hansel and Gretel .

In 2018 Franz Grundträger again played Peter Besenbinder and the speaker in Die Zauberflöte and led master classes in Düsseldorf and Savonlinna . A performance in the bass part of Mendelssohn-Bartholdy's Paulus had to be canceled due to illness despite the disputed dress rehearsal.

In 2019, together with Nicole Heesters , he spoke the narration of the Genesis Suite at its Austrian premiere in the Brucknerhaus in Linz and played the part of the narrator in the Gurre-Lieder in Tokyo .
