Franz Haller (anthropologist)

Franz Haller (born April 2, 1948 in Meran ; also known as Franz Josef Haller or Franz J. Haller) is a South Tyrolean anthropologist and documentary filmmaker .

Life

Haller grew up in Merano, where his father Franz Haller worked as a gynecologist. He then studied psychology at Rutgers University (USA) and ethnology at the University of Vienna . In 1974 Haller was a co-founder of the Brunnenburg Agricultural Museum in Tirolo . In 1974 he specialized in visual anthropology at the IWF Institute for Scientific Film in Göttingen . In 1975 he undertook a film expedition to lowland Indians on the Río Vaupés in Colombia , where ethnographic film units were created for the Encyclopaedia Cinematographica and the Max Planck Society . Haller lives in Gargazon near Meran.

Teaching

In 1976, on behalf of the Organization of American States , Haller was appointed professor of ethnology at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador in Quito , which he held until 1979. Haller has been a member of UNESCO's international Union of Anthropological & Ethnological Sciences since 1977 . In 1984 Haller founded the "Visual Documentation Working Group on South Tyrolean Folk Culture". From 1988 to 1994 Franz Haller taught visual anthropology at the Institute for Folklore at the University of Innsbruck . In 1998/99 Haller was a lecturer in the cultural history of the Alpine region at the University of Bozen . Franz J. Haller is the author of over 150 documentaries for teaching, science and television. In 2012 Haller opened the free internet portal with a picture and film archive on the cultural history of South Tyrol: tirolerland.tv.
