Franz Wilhelm von Pfuel (born April 8, 1733 in Gielsdorf ; † January 31, 1808 in Königsberg ) was a Prussian major general and commandant of Danzig .

Life

origin

Franz Wilhelm came from the old to Jahnsfelde in the Brandenburg Switzerland -based noble family of Pfuel . His parents were the eponymous Friedrich Wilhelm von Pfuhl (* August 16, 1690; † October 14, 1756), captain of a Prussian regiment, and his wife Dorothee Hedwig Scultetus von Unfried. General Ernst Ludwig von Pfuel (1716–1798) was his brother.

Military career

Pfuel began his career in the Prussian Army in 1750 as a corporal in infantry regiment "Württemberg" No. 46 . On October 4, 1753, Pfuel was promoted to ensign and on July 20, 1756 to second lieutenant . From 1756 to 1760 Pfuel took part in the Seven Years' War , where he was captured in the battle of Landeshut and was only able to report back to the regiment in 1763. The next promotion took place on November 17, 1759, to Premier Lieutenant , followed on September 17, 1772 to staff captain and finally on November 20, 1777 to captain and company commander in infantry regiment No. 46. Pfuel took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession and advanced on February 5, 1785 to major . On June 1, 1787 he was first commander of the grenadier battalion, and on March 6, 1791, he took over the entire Infantry Regiment No. 46. Furthermore Pfuel was on May 29, 1792 Lieutenant Colonel and on 15 January 1794 for Colonel promoted. He began his service as commandant of Danzig with a salary of 2000 thalers on September 12, 1797 and was promoted to major general on June 7, 1800 with a patent from June 11, 1800. On June 19, 1806 Pfuel was freed due to illness from service, delivered by the Commander stores on November 6, 1806 and dimittierte on August 5, 1807 800 taler supply . He died the following year.

He was a knight of the order Pour le Mérite . Pfuel is also said to have briefly held the rank of general in Russian service.

On January 2, 1778, Pfuel was given permission to marry and on February 9, 1778, he married Charlotte Sophie Hoffmann (born October 28, 1754 in Halle ; † April 27, 1802 in Danzig), daughter of Hofrat Friedrich Wilhelm Hoffmann , in Berlin . The marriage had two children:
