Friedrich Paul Kuehne (* 2. November 1989 in Erlangen , nickname Friedi ) is a German professional slackliners and multiple Highline - world record holder . He is known, among other things, for numerous first free solo ascents of longer and higher highlines worldwide and for inventing several acrobatic tricks on the highline.

Athletic career

Beginnings

Growing up in Rosenheim , Kühne was able to benefit from the proximity to the Alps from an early age . In his parents' house, skiing and mountaineering were part of the regular weekend program. As a teenager he soon got into gymnastics , bouldering and climbing via parkour and freerunning . At the age of 19 he stood on a slackline for the first time during a climbing holiday in Arco and, according to his own statements, quickly became "addicted" to the sport of balance.

Tricklining

Due to his gymnastics past, Kühne was initially very enthusiastic about tricklining . From 2010 to 2014 he took part in numerous trickline competitions, organized his first shows with his partner Elephant Slacklines at the time, and appeared at various international slackline events as well as on German television. He also set his first world record not in highlining, but in tricklining: In May 2011, Kühne and his friend Bernd Hassmann were the first slackliners to jump through a 50 m long, tightly stretched line in a combo. In December 2013, Kühne had his first major television appearance: In the Christmas episode of the ZDF live show "WETTEN, DASS ..." he bet that he could blow out six Christmas tree candles one after the other by "surfing" on a slackline - without falling down and in less than 3.5 minutes. He succeeded in the bet, but in the election for the show's king of betting he ended up just behind the winner in second place.

Highlining

Free solo on the highline to Lost Arrow Spire, Yosemite, 2018

Kühne tried his hand at his first highline when he was 20 years old. This was stretched at a height of 30 m over the Wolfsschlucht in Neubänen , the place that was to become a regular training spot for him and his colleagues in the years that followed. Despite his initial focus on tricklining, he ran a few highlines there and in the surrounding Alps until he finally turned his attention entirely to balancing at heights during an exchange year as a foreign language assistant in the USA . In popular highline areas on the North American west coast such as Yosemite , Squamish , Smith Rock , Leavenworth , Joshua Tree and Columbia River Gorge, he was able to climb numerous highlines of over 100 m in length for the first time. At festivals he made friends with American slackline icons such as Jerry Miszewski, Andy Lewis and Spencer Seabrooke, who supported him in numerous highline projects in the years that followed. In highlining, Kühne set several world records in the period 2015-2019.

Free solo

Kühne made his first "real" unsecured highline ascent in summer 2014 in Ostrov , Czech Republic , on a 25 m long, approx. 20 m high highline. Before that, he had already done numerous unsecured deep water solo as well as swami inspections of up to 40 m in length. The latter describes a variant of securing with a rope around the stomach or foot instead of wearing a full climbing harness. The first higher and more exposed free solo ascents followed during his year as a foreign language assistant in the USA. In the beginning he never let himself be filmed or photographed for reasons of personal motivation and kept his passion for free solo highlining a secret for several years, except for the knowledge of a few close friends. When he walked a 72 m long, 400 m high highline at the Hunlen Falls in British Columbia , Canada in August 2016 without a safety device, he allowed his friends to film him for the first time. The free solo world record was broken and Kühne's controversial passion was made public for the first time.
