Fritz Graßhoff (after his emigration also: Fritz Grasshoff, born December 9, 1913 in Quedlinburg , † February 9, 1997 in Hudson , Canada ) was a German draftsman , painter , writer and writer .

Life

Fritz Graßhoff spent his youth in Quedlinburg, where his father (formerly a seaman) lived as a coal merchant. The rough milieu later left many traces in his ballads and songs. In 1933 he graduated from high school and began an apprenticeship as a church painter; later he worked as a journalist. In 1938 he joined the military and ended up in the Soviet Union during the war, and finally in British captivity. As a prisoner of war he came to Heiligenhafen and lived in the barracks camp. From 1946 to 1967 he lived in Celle . During this time he traveled a lot to Greece and lived temporarily in Sweden. At his first exhibition (1954 in Hanover), the Kunsthalle Hamburg and the Lehmbruck Museum Duisburg were bought. His writing activity ran parallel to this. He earned his living mainly with hit lyrics (e.g. he wrote various hits for Lale Andersen and Freddy Quinn , but also the evergreen Take me with captain, on a journey for Hans Albers ), while in addition to his often rough songs and ballads ( set to music by musicians such as Heinz Gietz , Lotar Olias , Siegfried Strohbach , Bert Grund , Wolfgang “Schobert” Schulz von Schobert and Black or James Last , at that time still Hans Last) also wrote serious poetry as well as texts by the Swedish national poet Carl Michael Bellman and from the Roman and translated to Greek antiquity. At times Graßhoff was one of the most recited German writers - well-known interpreters such as René Deltgen , Gustav Knuth , Inge Meysel and Heinz Reincke made his works popular through several record productions. Graßhoff's own readings, e.g. Sometimes spoken as jazz and lyric events with drum accompaniment from a truck, they were quite popular.

Graßhoff stayed away from the literature business; He suffered from the fact that he was mainly rated according to his hit texts, and when his biographical novel Der Blaue Heinrich received little attention in 1980, he emigrated, disappointed by the German situation, from Zwingenberg an der Bergstrasse to Canada, where he spent the last 14 years of his Lived in his home on the Ottawa River. In the meantime, Graßhoff has found a recognized place in literature , especially through his late poetry ( On the Importance of Things ) and a re-evaluation of his novel The Blue Heinrich , which is reflected in numerous essays in literary magazines.
