In Group 1, ex-world champions Uruguay were at least classified as one of the favorites, but things turned out differently. Although the Urus won against the underdog Colombia 2-1 in their first game, the South Americans lost the game against Yugoslavia (1: 3) and against the USSR (1: 2). The Yugoslavs failed in their first game against the Soviet athletes 0: 2, but against the Urus and Colombia (5: 0) drove the filigree technicians from the Balkans, who later played well-known Bundesliga players with Soskic, Jusufi, Skoblar and Sekularac , convincing victories and qualified for the quarterfinals as second in the group. The group winners were the USSR, which only allowed themselves a little slip up against bottom-bottom Colombia (4: 4).
