Goals: 1-0 Grahn (90.)
The Italians saved their strength in group 2 for the next games, because two goalless draws against Uruguay and Israel, as well as a meager 1-0 win over Sweden were enough to win the group. Uruguay finished in second place due to their one goal better goal difference against Sweden. A total of six goals were scored in this group, which is characterized by economic defensive football.
Quarter finals
45,000 | Aztec Stadium ( Mexico City ) | Uruguay | Soviet Union | Van Ravens ( Netherlands ) | 1: 0 a.d. (0: 0, 0: 0) | 1-0 Espárrago (116.) |
Uruguay and the USSR met in the Aztec Stadium. The mostly Mexican viewers hung on the transistor radios, because Mexico was playing against Italy at the same time and Urus and Russians were playing weakly and were mainly busy interrupting the flow of the game by fouling each other. That exhausting kick was decided by the goal from Víctor Espárrago minutes before the end of extra time. Again, the 2.4 million people had made it into the top football world - against the team of a 200 million strong society.
Semifinals
51,000 | Estadio Jalisco ( Guadalajara ) | Brazil | Uruguay | Ortiz de Mendíbil ( Spain ) | 3: 1 (1: 1) | 0: 1 Cubilla (19th) 1: 1 Clodoaldo (44th) 2: 1 Jairzinho (76th) 3: 1 Rivelino (89th) |
Uruguay and Brazil met in the second semi-final game in Guadalajara at 31 degrees in the shade and 45 degrees on the pitch. Surprisingly, the Urus took the lead through Cubilla against the Brazilians who had dominated the game until then. Only shortly before the half-time whistle did Clodoaldo equalize from a tight angle against a tough, uncomfortable defense from Uruguay. The referee's performance in the second round was disappointing. Several Urus fouls against the far superior Brazilians were either not whistled at all or moved outside the penalty area. But Jairzinho and Rivelino deservedly defeated the great Urus goalkeeper Mazurkiewicz in the closing stages. The favorite had prevailed after all.
Game for third place
Germany secured third place with a narrow 1-0 win over Uruguay. The Urus were the stronger team, but failed because of Horst Wolter , who was given the chance by Helmut Schön to prove himself.
