Natural allocation

The Weiherberg belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Osthessisches Bergland (No. 35), in the main unit Hohe Rhön (354) and in the subunit Central Rhön (354.1) to the natural area Wasserkuppenrhön (354.10), which extends essentially southeast of the mountain. A spur in the northeast, to which the landscape leads from the direction of the mountain top past the Enzianhütte , is the Bornberg ; On topographic maps there is the altitude ( 631.7  m ) on a forest path and on the eastern flank of the Weiherberg, without altitude, the name Heiligenberg can be found. The southern mountain neighbor is the Weiherkuppe ( 758.6  m ).

Flowing waters

Running waters that arise on or near the Weiherberg are ( clockwise ): Scheppenbach (north-north-west), Brandbach (north-east) and Schlichtwasser (south-east), which belong to the Ulster catchment area , as well as Weiherbergerbach (south) and Schöpfersbach (west), which to belong to that of the Lothers ; Beyond the source of the Scheppenbach, the Wanne (west-north-west) and Bieber (north-west), which flow into the Haune , arise near the mountain .

Protected areas

Parts of the landscape protection area Hessische Rhön ( CDDA -Nr. 378477; designated 1967; 410.1096  km² ), the fauna-flora-habitat- area Hochrhön (FFH-Nr. 5525-351; 48.0962 km²) and lie on the Weiherberg of the bird sanctuary Hessische Rhön (VSG No. 5425-401; 360.8013 km²). Parts of the Weiherkuppe nature reserve near Sieblos extend to the transition area to the Weiherkuppe to the south (CDDA no. 555546335; 1989; 9.88  ha ).

Transport, hiking and leisure

The north side of the Weiherberg with the Enzianhütte

North past the Weiherberg through the hamlets and localities Mittelberg, Grabenhof and Dietges the federal road 458 leads . On the road at the Grabenhöfchen mountain pass ( 685  m ) is the hikers' car park of the same name . In Dietges, the B 458 is crossed by the state road  3068. It is part of the Hochrhönring and runs on the east side of the Weiherberg in the saddle ( 694  m ) between it and the Wasserkuppe. Here the L 3307 branches off, which leads south past Weiherberg through Sieblos and Tränkhof to Poppenhausen. The Abtsroda hikers' car park is also near this junction .

Close to the summit, a common section of the European long-distance hiking trails E3 and E6 runs across the southern slope of the mountain in the area between the Milseburg, Weiherberg, Abtsroda and Wasserkuppe . The mountain is also accessible to tourists by hiking trails of the Rhön Club and a variant of the Hochrhöner . The Enzianhütte , a managed refuge of the German Alpine Club , Fulda section, stands on its northern slope . Apart from the northern slope, the large summit region with a transmission mast is not forested; it offers good prospects especially to the west and east. The mountain is also used as a site for operating model airplanes .
