Fuel is an American rock band that was formed in 1994 and had their greatest successes around the turn of the millennium. Since a reorganization in 2010, the front man Brett Scallions is the only remaining founding member of the band.

history

Various cover bands and foundation of Fuel (before 1998)

Childhood friends Carl Bell and Jeff Abercrombie had made music together in high school. In college, Bell met drummer Jody Abbott, with whom he formed various college bands. A little later the three of them founded the cover band Reel Too Real , which Brett Scallions joined in 1993 after a concert in a bar in Jackson , Tennessee . Since the musicians were planning to write their own material, they renamed themselves Small The Joy . A year later, an EP of the same name was released under this name. Shortly before the release of the second EP Porcelain , the band decided to change their name again - this time to Fuel . Her debut EP was re-released under this name. The second EP, which also contained the later hit single Shimmer , brought the band a record deal with 550 imprint and Epic Records . The first studio EP Hazleton was released on this label in March 1998 .

Success in the mainstream (1998-2005)

A few weeks later the debut album was recorded together with producer Steven Haigler at Longview Farm Studios in North Brookfield , Massachusetts . For the studio recordings, the drummer Jody Abbott was replaced by Jonathan Mover. Sunburn was finally released on March 31, 1998, and the album also featured the song Shimmer . Shimmer was released as the first single from the album and was able to place in several charts, including number 2 in the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks and number 11 in the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks. On the official Billboard Hot 100 , the song climbed to number 42. In Australia, the song reached number 43 of the best-selling singles of the year in 1999; She also received a platinum record for more than 70,000 records sold. The other singles Bittersweet , Jesus or a Gun and Sunburn also received airplay, but missed the official US charts. Bittersweet was able to reach number 70 in the singles charts in Australia. In 1998 the band wrote the song Walk the Sky , which was used for the soundtrack of the movie Godzilla by Roland Emmerich but was not released on the album Sunburn . Only when the album was reissued in 2003 was the single included as a bonus track. The theme song Sunburn was used for the soundtrack of the 2000 film Scream 3 by Wes Craven . Her album Sunburn reached platinum status in the US in May 2000. In late 2000, Fuels released his second studio album, Something Like Human , whose single Hemorrhage (In My Hands) became the band's most successful. It climbed to # 30 on the Hot 100 and topped mainstream rock tracks for 12 weeks. The album held a double platinum award one year after its release in September 2001, the highest ranking on the Billboard 200 was number 17. In September 2003, the third studio album, Natural Selection , was released and reached number 15 on the US charts. From this the singles Won't Back Down , Falls on Me and Million Miles were extracted, which were able to place themselves in various charts again. The album received a Grammy nomination for production in 2004 , but was defeated by Radiohead's Hail to the Thief . Singles from the album were also used for various soundtracks, including Daredevil and Need for Speed: Underground . At the end of 2004, Kevin Miller, who had played the drums instead of Jody Abbott in previous years, left the band. At the end of 2005, the band's first best-of album was finally released, entitled The Best of Fuel .

Exit of the front man Brett Scallions and various line-up changes (2006-2010)

On February 7, 2006, the band announced that singer Brett Scallions had left the band. A new singer was now being sought for the fourth studio album, the instrumental parts of which had already been written. Jeff Abercrombie and Carl Bell wanted the American Idol candidate Chris Daughtry and asked him during the TV show Extra if he would like to; Daughtry declined the offer. Previously, Chris Daughtry had sung the Fuel song Hemorrhage (In My Hands) on American Idol's Top 20 Show . At the same time, Tommy Stewart, former Godsmack drummer , was introduced as the new drummer in the band. Due to scheduling difficulties, however, Mötley Crüe drummers Tommy Lee and Josh Freese , who are active in Guns n 'Roses and Weezer , among others , recorded the album. In April 2007, the band then announced Toryn Green as the new lead singer. The fourth album Angels & Devils was released two months later and reached number 42 on the US album charts with 15,000 units sold. The singles Wasted Time and Gone were released from the album, but there was no major success.

Brett Scallions returns (since 2010)

On April 8, 2010, the band announced their reform under Brett Scallions. Jeff Abercrombie and Carl Bell were no longer there. Abercrombie was replaced by former shinedown bassist Brad Stewart. Only a few weeks later Scallions announced that Jasin Todd, also a former musician of Shinedown, would join as lead guitarist. Half a year later he left the band because Yogi Lonich, who had jumped in briefly before Todd, returned. In March 2011 Scallions founded the band World Fire Brigade together with the entire Fuel line-up , which was complemented by the Smile Empty Soul front man Sean Danielsen. In May 2011, Lonich was kicked out of the band because, according to Scallions, he had repeatedly failed to adhere to agreements and had not appeared for a performance. He was replaced by Andy Andersson. In March 2012 the band went into the studio to record the album Puppet Strings . Although the album should have been released in late 2012, the recordings were still not finished in early 2013. In March 2013, drummer Ken Schalk got out to have more time for his family. He was replaced by Bryan Keeling. No songs were recorded with him, instead he left the band to go on tour with Eric Sardinas . Shannon Boone, drummer for Puddle of Mudd , replaced him. The recordings for Puppet Strings were then quickly stopped. The album was released in March 2014, almost seven years after the last album. The lead single Yeah! was offered for free download on the band's website, the first radio single was Soul to Preach To and reached number 33 on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks. Since Brad Stewart had the opportunity to join Saliva , he left the band. Filter's Phil Buckman took his place. In 2016 the band took part in the Make America Rock Again tour with POD and Trapt among others . After the band had calmed down in the months that followed, Scallions announced a new album for 2018. The band also played a few concerts in North America and Australia.
