The GelreDome is a football stadium in the Dutch city of Arnhem . The Vitesse Arnhem football club plays its home games here. It was built between 1996 and 1998 and equipped with a closable roof. A special feature is the movable playing field that can be moved out of the stadium for concerts or other events.

history

There were already plans for a new Vitesse stadium in the 1980s. At that time they still played in the Nieuw-Monnikenhuize . The later club president Karel Aalbers was mainly responsible for the plans . On July 12, 1996, construction work began on a meadow on Batavierenweg, south of the Rhine. The official name GelreDome was announced on the same day . The GelreDome opened on March 25, 1998 with the game Vitesse against NAC Breda , which Arnhem won 4-1.

The first concerts took place on March 28 and 29, 1998 , when the Spice Girls appeared as the first known pop group in the stadium. In 1999 the millionth visitor to the stadium was recorded, a year later the two million visitor mark was exceeded.

For the 2016/17 season, the space available in the stadium for football matches was reduced from 25,500 to 21,248. Since the occupancy rate has decreased in recent years and Vitesse had an average of 17,000 spectators in 2015/16, rows of seats in the north and east stands and in the main tier are covered. This is intended to bring the spectators closer to the field. The lower rows of seats had to be left unoccupied for the fire brigade, which gave the impression on television that the stadium was half empty.

Events

The GelreDome regularly hosts concerts and events. For example, musicians such as Paul McCartney , Iron Maiden , Metallica , U2 , Rammstein , Coldplay , Britney Spears , Pearl Jam , André Rieu , Madonna , Justin Bieber , Prince , Anouk , Ilse DeLange , Tina Turner and Da Tweekaz performed there. In addition, the Qlimax takes place here once a year , an event of the hardstyle scene , which set a new visitor record in the GelreDome in 2009 with around 35,000 visitors. With the HardBass, organized by B2S, another event from the hardstyle scene takes place every year in the Gelredome. In 2001 came the Motorai Fair for the first time motorcycle event in the stadium, followed in 2002 by the FIM World Supercross, which took place a year later again. The GelreDome has also been used for tractor pulling and monster trucks for a number of years . The stadium also gained great fame through the German pop singer Helene Fischer , who gave her only Benelux concert on her 2018 tour there.

European Football Championship 2000

The GelreDome was one of the venues for the European Football Championship 2000 , which took place in Belgium and the Netherlands. There were three preliminary round matches in Arnhem.
