The mentally retarded Nick Nikas, who has been subjected to court therapy sessions, talks to his doctor about his abusive grandmother, who he lives with in Queens, New York, and how he doesn't know how to write about his anger or the social effects of his actions can control. He is taken out of the meeting by his brother Connie, who has planned a bank robbery so they can run away to Virginia. They want to loot 65,000 US dollars. But Nick, who was the first to run away in panic after the attack, was caught by the police while escaping and brought to Rikers Island .

Since Connie is missing US $ 10,000 on the bail because the stolen money was colored by a paint cartridge that exploded during the escape , he has to find it in another way. He finally tries to get the money from his friend Corey's mother, which fails. In the meantime, his brother has made all sorts of enemies in prison. Connie kidnaps Nick in a wheelchair from a hospital he was taken to after being beaten in prison. When the two find asylum with a family, it turns out that Connie was not taking Nick, but someone else, Ray. Together with him he tries to raise money, which ultimately leads to Connie's arrest and Ray's fall from a house. Connie's actions also lead to the arrest of the 16-year-old Crystal - granddaughter of the woman who offered him asylum - and a security guard. After Connie's confession, Nick is released and takes part in group work for the first time at a therapy session.

Staff and cast

It was directed by brothers Benny and Josh Safdie . The latter also wrote the script for the film together with Ronald Bronstein . In an interview with Arte , the directors said they were heavily influenced by writing by Norman Mailer , particularly his books Gnadenlos and In the Belly of the Beast . The American reality TV series COPS was also an inspiration. The film seemed to be running out of time, and so the brothers wanted to make the speed in Good Time a figure of their own.

Robert Pattinson plays Connie Nikas in the film, Benny Safdie, one of the directors of the film, took over the role of his mentally retarded brother Nick. Peter Verby plays Peter, his psychiatrist, and Jennifer Jason Leigh stars as Corey Ellman. The rapper Necro took on a smaller role in the film with Caliph.

Filming and lighting

Filming took place in all five boroughs of New York , including Flushing , Rego Park , Forest Hills and Long Island amusement park . Sean Price Williams acted as cameraman . The film was shot in 35mm - Scope rotated with two individual images were taken for an image. During the filming, you worked with mixed light , consisting of daylight and artificial light , to get different color temperatures into the film, because New York is such a mixed city, according to Josh Safdie. The director went on to explain that people often only worked with individual light sources, as this often corresponds to reality these days, as in a scene shown in the film in the grandmother's house, which is only lit by a running television set. His brother Ben explained that the existing light sources had been artificially expanded, such as a red light on a bus, in which the entire scene was bathed in artificial red light in order to obtain the minimum level of lighting necessary for the production of analog film material .

Film music and sound design

The score was composed by Oneohtrix Point Never alias Daniel Lopatin. Lopatin was honored for his work as the best film composer at the Cannes Film Festival in February 2017. The soundtrack for the film includes 13 pieces of music and was released on August 11, 2017 as a double LP, CD and download. The sound design by Ryan M. Price is movies like Pickpocket by Robert Bresson been inspired, the directors. For example, long shots were taken , in which, for example, the clinking of coins can be heard, which is supposed to look like a close-up . A deleted dream sequence in which the two brothers made it to Virginia, and Connie has to slay a creature, has been slightly changed and used as the music video for the soundtrack song The Pure and the Damned .

reception

Age rating

In Germany the film is FSK 12 . The statement of reasons for the release states: “The film is narrated with numerous genre-typical means, but also endeavors to present the milieu and characters in a realistic manner. The protagonist in particular is drawn ambivalently between solidarity with his brother and unscrupulousness. This ambivalence as well as some depictions of violence and sexuality could lead to a socio-ethical disorientation in younger children. "

Reviews and grossing results

The film has so far won over 92 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 7.6 out of a possible 10 points.

Michael Sennhauser from Radio SRF 2 Kultur says the film is amazingly well done: “Camera and editing, the breathlessly fast, whipping dramaturgy, the pure narrative energy are admirable and quite unique. It's a film like a highly disciplined, controlled trip. ”According to Sennhauser, the plot could, however, also drive a comedy with a little less violence and brutality, and individual scenes are definitely worthy of a showpiece. In addition, the electronic bombast sound of Oneohtrix Point Never, alias Daniel Lopatin, now and then completely takes over the film, almost degrading it to a video clip, according to Sennhauser.

Pascal Blum from the Tages-Anzeiger says: “It's an unbelievable trip, a kind of feverish dream, as the Safdies portray this night in New York that follows the bank robbery: with whipped scenes at the highest level of nervousness, with the police constantly at the door hammers and the sleazy electronic sound of Oneohtrix Point Never fires a night that degenerates in a way that can only be called crazy. "

Frank Schnelle from epd Film says that despite the stringent, “ugly” aesthetics, the film fails to really interest us in the protagonist's nightmare journey : “The camera is constantly moving towards him, but he remains alien to us. This may also be due to Robert Pattinson's expressionless play. Hardly recognizable from a physical point of view compared to his earlier work, he does not manage to fill the low-life role with real life. His empty facial expressions are only useful as a projection surface. "

Andreas Busche from Tagesspiegel comments on Nick, who is dominated by Pattinson with his annoying physique, that this is the emotional center of the film, and Williams prefers to bathe him in shimmering neon light, like a predator on a night-time prey. The longer the film lasts, the clearer it becomes that the dynamics of the events are taking on a life of their own, continues Busche: "What began as a noble rescue mission for Nick, at some point degenerates into pure actionism, it's about pure survival."

The worldwide revenue of the film so far amounts to around 3 million US dollars.
