Gremlins - Little Monsters

Gremlins 2 - The return of the little monsters (original title Gremlins 2 - The New Batch ) is a film by Joe Dante from the year 1990. The screenplay comes from Charles S. Haas . The film opened in German cinemas on August 23, 1990.

action

A few years after the Gremlins devastated Billy and Kate's hometown (see Gremlins - Little Monsters ), the young couple lives in New York and works in the high-tech center of media mogul Daniel Clamp. In addition to a television station, numerous shops and restaurants and an architecture office, there is also a research laboratory in the center. One day the friendly Mogwai Gizmo picked up by an employee ends up there after its owner dies. Gizmo is freed by Bill and hidden in a drawer at his workplace.

When Gizmo leaves the drawer unattended and unfortunately comes into contact with water, four voracious and aggressive Mogwais hatch from his fur: the crazy Daffy, the stupid Lenny, the aggressive George and their leader, the vicious Mohawk, who is the born again Stripe from the first film. They lock Gizmo in a ventilation shaft and go in search of food. Because if a mogwai eats after midnight , it turns into a gremlin. So it happens; Immediately the gremlins vandalize the building, multiply quickly when they detonate a microwave oven and the sprinkler system rains them, terrifying all employees and visitors. Some of the Gremlins drink extracts in the research laboratory and mutate, so that z. B. one gremlin becomes half a bat and another develops human intelligence. The lead scientist Dr. Catheter tries first with the help of Billy and the chief guard Forster to drive away the gremlins by force of arms. However, Catheter is killed by the electric gremlin and Forster is scared away by the mutant Greta-Gremlin (half gremlin, half woman) who is in love. Meanwhile, Mohawk drinks a serum that half turns him into a giant spider. With the help of his new skills, he spins a huge web in which Kate and Billy's boss Marla get caught. Before Mohawk manages to kill the two of them, Gizmo destroys him with a flaming bottle of correction fluid .

After Mohawk's death, the clever gremlin takes command of the gremlin army, prepares them for the invasion of New York and, out of anticipation, sings the song New York, New York . Billy and Kate, who have now received support from Clamp, the Futtermans, Mr. Katsuji and Grandpa Fred, spray water on the Gremlin Army with a fire hose and let the electric Gremlin loose on them. All gremlins will be destroyed by the power surges. The grateful Clamp promises Billy, Kate, Katsuji and Grandpa Fred a promotion. Later he receives a call from Forster, who is locked in the washrooms. With him is Greta-Gremlin, who wants to force him to marry her. The film ends with a shot of Forster who apparently accepts his fate.

background

The film can be classified in the genre of horror comedies, violence is portrayed in a cartoon and slapstick manner and there are numerous joking references to other films such as Rambo , The Wizard of Oz , The Phantom of the Opera and the first Gremlins film. In addition, some characters are shown exaggerated like parodies. The scientist Doctor Catheter is so much on the hunt for new viruses and bacteria (telling quote when he received a delivery of germs in the mail: “I'm supposed to get the flu next week”) that he himself pocketed his secretary's full-blown handkerchief to investigate. In addition, his (film) past as Dracula is repeatedly alluded to. The multimillionaire Daniel Clamp, on the other hand, for whom Donald Trump was clearly the godfather, is extraordinarily bored in his office on the roof of the Clamp Tower because there are people who really do everything for him and he has nothing to do, so that he finally does decides on a job creation measure with his secretary (quote: "Oh, I know what! I'll dictate a few house letters to you!"). Later he was even “happy” about the variety of Gremlins and founded a task force, which, however, was not used.

Versions

The film exists in two versions, a cinema and a video version. The difference lies in a scene in the middle of the film. In the theatrical version, the film allegedly breaks at this point and the gremlins take control of the projector, as a result of which Hulk Hogan is called to help in a cinema and yells at the gremlins. In the video version, a video recorder breaking down is simulated there. After some video noise, the gremlins can be found e.g. B. in a western at the side of John Wayne again, where one of them is shot. When it is broadcast on TV, it differs which version is broadcast. Sometimes you see the cinema version and sometimes the video version. In contrast to the VHS version, the DVD or Blu-Ray version shows the theatrical version with the Hulk-Hogan scene. However, the John Wayne scene can be seen in the bonus material.

Reviews

Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times criticizes that the film has "too little story and too many gremlins".

Ken Hanke of Mountain Xpress calls the film a "surprisingly pleasant sequel".

"Trick-technically impressive continuation of the popular success" Gremlins - Kleine Monster "(1983), which escalates into an enjoyable orgy of devastation, but exaggerates the inside joke in the swipes at the media and entertainment culture."

Awards

The comedy was nominated for the Saturn Award in six categories in 1991 , including best fantasy film . Nominees included Joe Dante ( director ), Jerry Goldsmith, John Glover and Robert Picardo (both as supporting actors ), and Rick Baker, Ken Pepiot and Dennis Michelson (together for special effects ).
