from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Grindrod Limited is the holding of an international and privately run logistics group of subsidiaries , joint ventures and other holdings based in Durban , South Africa . Their corporate activities are diversified, have a considerable market share in southern Africa and are based on a history spanning more than 100 years.

Business activity

The field of activity of the Grindrod group of companies lies in the transport of goods by road, rail, water and air as well as in peripheral services. There are basically two business areas, freight and financial services. There are also holdings in the freight sector, for example Oiltanking Grindrod Calulo (OTGC) with locations in Durban and Cape Town . Grindrod Bank was established as an investment bank for the company's financial sector .

For container freight services in southern Africa , the Ocean Africa division is a network that regularly serves the ports in Beira , Durban , East London , Cape Town , Lüderitz , Maputo and Port Elizabeth and works as a feeder service in connection with overseas freight services . In addition, Ocean Africa offers storage capacities near the ports in Durban and Cape Town.

The Grindrod Group also operates a shipping agency with technical services for the offshore sector, whose headquarters are in Cape Town. A versatile service area developed under the name Sturrock Grindrod Maritime , in 2012 from the merger with Sturrock Shipping , founded in 1969 . This also includes the formerly independent shipping agencies Mitchell Cotts Maritime (founded in 1895) and King & Sons (founded in 1881). This division is part of the core business and has 57 branches worldwide.

The Freight Services division is responsible for the landside operations of the freight business . This includes the organization of road transport, goods handling activities , warehouse logistics and loading processes as well as the handling of all freight.

The Grindrod Fuelogic and Grindrod Petrologistics divisions are used to transport fuels and other liquid energy carriers . For example, large tank and gas depots in Alberton , Durban, Kroonstad , Mossel Bay , Port Elizabeth and Witbank are supplied with energy sources from refineries and import warehouses (primary sector) as well as commercial end-users (secondary sector). There is also a branch for this business area in the Grindrod Maputo Car Terminal .

Grindrod Fuelogic, Namibia , is based in Walvis Bay and supplies the country's primary and secondary sectors and operates tank farms. The Grindrod Petrologistics division with business areas in Botswana also supplies the country's primary and secondary sectors here. Activities are concentrated on Gaborone and Francistown .

The Oiltanking Grindrod Calulo (Pty) Ltd. ( OTCALULO ) started construction of its Ngqura tank farm for petroleum products in the port of Ngqura in February 2019 . This investment is intended to shut down the outdated tank farms near the port of Port Elizabeth. The new location will in future be the country's leading mineral oil trading center. It is planned that the liquid products will be conveyed through pipelines to the storage containers from the landing stages in the port to the tank farm .

The Maputo Port Development Company as a division of Grindrod is responsible for the development of the concession area in the Mozambican port of Maputo . At the same time, it has the powers of a port authority and is therefore responsible for the port development plan. Because the port is of great importance for part of the sub-Saharan region due to its location and good transport connections , the company has an influential control instrument within the movement of goods on the East African coast.

history

The company was founded in 1910 and Captain John Grindrod with his handling and forwarding agency Grindrod & Company . The company African Coasters , founded in 1933 , later becomes the central area of ship logistics at Grindrod.

In 1964 the South African mining company Union Corporation bought 51 percent of the shares in African Coasters . This stake enabled the ship fleet to be modernized, but was later revised (1986, when the company went public). In 1966, African Coasters and rival Smith's Coasters merged. This creates Unicorn Shipping Holdings (Pty) Ltd. ( Unicorn Lines ).

In the field of freight logistics, the predecessor of the Ocean Africa Container Lines division was a pioneer of marine container freight in South Africa. In 1971, the use of freight containers began and the country's first container depot was built in the port of Durban. Step by step, further container terminals of their own were built in Maputo , Richards Bay and Walvis Bay (today in Namibia).

In 1986, Grindrod was listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange for the first time and under the name of the newly founded holding company Unicorn Shipping Holdings (Pty) Ltd. ( Grincor ) listed.

In 1999, Grindrod acquired a further 40 percent of the shares in Unicorn and was thus able to regain majority control. In the same year, Island View Shipping ( IVS ), based in Durban, is acquired , which expands Grindrod's range of activities in the field of bulk goods.

In 2001 the company was renamed Grindrod Limited .

In 2003, the bulk cargo terminals in the port of Richards Bay went into operation and in 2005 Grindrod bought the Marriott Corporate Property Bank , which now operates as a subsidiary of Grindrod Bank and Grindrod Asset Management Services . A restructuring of the terminal and logistics area took place in 2017, whereby the railway construction branch was discontinued.

Grindrod Academy

In Durban (Congella) the company has its own training facility, the Grindrod Shipping Training Academy . This facility offers courses in sea rescue services and survival training. The training facility is recognized by the South African Marine Safety Authority . The open offers ( Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training ) are not only aimed at ship crews, but also at the staff of drilling and production platforms.
