Groton is a town in Caledonia County in the state of Vermont in the United States with 1,022 inhabitants (according to the 2010 census).

Geographical location
Groton is located in the southwest of Caledonia County and borders Washington County to the west and Orange County to the south, and the Green Mountains to the northeast . The Wells River with its tributaries flows southeast through the town. It flows into the Connecticut River . There are several lakes in the town's area, the largest being Lake Groton and a little south of Ricker Pond . The surface of the town is hilly, the highest point being the 1022 m high Signal Mountain .

history
The Grant for Groton was proclaimed on November 7, 1780 and on October 20, 1789 it was awarded to Thomas Butterfield and others. It covered an area of 28,000 acres (11,331 hectares). The settlement began in 1787. The constituent assembly of the town took place on March 28, 1797.
It's not clear whether Groton was named after Groton , Massachusetts or Groton , Connecticut . However, these towns were both named after Groton , Suffolk , home of the first Massachusetts governor and two Connecticut governors.
Groton was on the Montpelier – Wells River railway . On September 15, 1873, the section between Wells River and Groton was put into operation and on November 1, the entire route. It was shut down in 1956.

Culture and sights
Parks
The Groton State Forest covers more than 26,000 acres (10,520 hectares ). This makes it the second largest area administered by the Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation. It was created in 1919. The Groton State Forest has seven state parks, the Groton Nature Center and eight lakes. The Civilian Conservation Corps developed the area with streets, paths, fire watchtowers and picnic areas.

US Highway 302 runs through the southeast, connecting Groton with Montpelier and Barre in the west and Wells River in the east. From it branches off in a northerly direction from Vermont State Route 232 to Marshfield.

Groton is part of the Blue Mountain Union School District with Ryegate and Wells River .
There is no school in Groton. Schoolchildren attend Blue Mountain Union School in Wells River. She offers classes from pre-kindergarten through high school graduation in the twelfth grade.
The Groton Free Public Library is located on Scotts Highway in Groton in the historic Alice Lord Goodine House .
The Groton Historical Society , founded in the early 1930s, takes care of the preservation of history .
