history

For a long time, pits and mountains were listed together in censuses. In 1869 86 people lived in Gruben, in 1890 Gruben and Berg were inhabited by 68 people who lived in 21 houses. In 1951 there were 7 houses with 29 inhabitants on Berg, while Gruben had 10 houses with 45 people. In addition, 28 alpine huts were counted among pits and mountains.

Buildings

Gruben is home to two buildings of cultural and historical interest. The Lurnschütt plague chapel is a towerless chapel that was built on the Seintzgerweg, today's Tauerntalwanderweg. Tradition has it that it was built after 1635 and renovated in 1650 after an outbreak of the plague. The chapel is a rectangular building with a slightly drawn-in, polygonal choir. The steep roof was covered with shingles, and the rectangular portal was let into the gable wall. Inside, the chapel houses a wooden altar, possibly from the 17th century. Further items of equipment are a painting of the poor souls in purgatory from the second half of the 19th century and a painting with the image of the Holy Trinity with a representation of Mary and Saint Roch.

Also of importance is the Raspen farm (pits no. 12), which was mentioned in a document in the first half of the 18th century as a free pen of Count Welsberg. The farm is a closed pair farm with a well house and a saw. The house, a two-story block building, was built in the shape of the 19th century. The building was extended around 1900 and has a clapboard purlin roof.
