Settlement and population
In earlier times Kaltenhaus und Stein was much more densely populated with farms than it is today. In 1881 there were eleven farm positions in the fraction. These were the Höfe Heinzer, Krister, Bichler, Lublasser, Lagner, Hasler, Kranebitter, Hinterau, Wirtler, Spiegelburger and Mair, with 44 people living at the Bichlerhof alone. At the 1869 census, 129 people lived in Stein und Kaltenhaus, 16 houses were counted. In the 1890 census, the number of residents of Kaltenhaus and Stein had fallen sharply, with Stein housing three houses and 35 people at that time. The population decline continued into the 20th century, with only 22 people living in stone in 1951.
Bichlerhof
The Bichlerhof in Stein (Kaltenhaus No. 3) was built on an exposed point above the Tauern Valley. It is one of the few farms in the area that were awarded under inheritance law. The Schwaighof was mentioned in a document as early as the late Middle Ages, with the first tradition dating back to 1437 being preserved. The house of the Bichlerhof dates from the early 18th century and was built between 1721 and 1723. It is a two-storey, baroque-era block building on a rubble foundation, which was provided with a shingle-covered gable roof. In addition to the residential building, the Bichlerhof also includes the farm building on the north side, which was built in two construction phases. Parts of the farm building date from 1689 to 1690, the remaining part was built together with the residential building. The courtyard also includes a two-storey grain bin from 1764 and a somewhat secluded grain mill, which probably dates from the 19th century.
