Buildings and sights

Klaunzkapelle

The Klaunzkapelle
The rococo altar of the Klaunzkapelle

The most important sight of Klaunz is the Klaunzkapelle or the Klaunzkirchel. It rises in a dominant position on the Klaunzerberg and was built in 1700 and consecrated in 1713 by the archpriest from Gmünd Maria Hilf . After extensive renovations in 1970, the chapel was rededicated on July 4, 1971. The chapel is and a two-bay chapel with a rectangular floor plan with a three-sided apse. Externally, the mighty facade tower dominates with a striking, octagonal, shingle-covered pointed helmet, which is crowned by a ball and cross. The chapel also has a shingled gable roof. The long walls of the chapel, like the sloping choir, are perforated with arched windows, the entrance portal is on the tower side. Inside the chapel is characterized by a barrel vault with stitch caps.

The interior is dominated by a rococo altar that was donated by Pastor Endsinger in 1770. The altar made by Michael Huber is made of wood with a pink and gray marble frame, with the ornamental parts being gilded. The altarpiece shows a representation of Mary Help after Lucas Cranach, in the extract there is a painting of St. Joseph with child. The statues attached to the side of the pillars were created by Bartlmä Mayr and represent two bishops without individual attributes. There are also two putti and two flame vases on the extension.

There are several legends about the construction of the chapel. One says that the Motiser farmer, who had previously remained childless, met a woman with a newborn child one day. She took them in, but the next day their mother disappeared. The peasant woman and her husband then believed in a miracle and decided to raise the child like their own. After the couple subsequently received numerous children, they had the Klaunzkapelle built out of gratitude. The connection with the children's blessing has remained with the Klaunzkapelle to this day. According to an old custom, you should be given a boy on a pilgrimage from the Bach Chapel to the Klaunz Chapel, and in the opposite direction with a girl.

Other sights

On the way from Klaunz to Kals-Matreier-Thörl is the St.-Veit-Stöckl from the 18th century. The brick wayside shrine with pillar porch and flat saddle roof was restored in 1984 and partially changed. The arched niche houses an altar. The painting shows St. Vitus in an oil kettle in folk painting. There are several votive pictures in prints from the 19th century on the side walls.

In addition to the sacred buildings, there is also an art-historically important farmhouse in Klaunz, the Moter farmer's farm (Klaunz No. 8), the order of which has been documented since the middle of the 18th century. The yard was a free pen of the Carmelite monastery in Lienz. Originally the courtyard was built as a double courtyard, today only the southern part remains. The two-story, gable-sided corner corridor house probably dates from the 17th century and was built with a brick foundation and a brick ground floor. The upper floor is built in a block construction, the block purlin roof is covered with boards. The room facing the valley has paneling from the 18th century and a brick oven.
