geography

Tauer is the northernmost fraction of the municipality of Matrei. It is located in the cadastral community of Matrei in Osttirol Land and extends over the northern part of the Iseltal and the Gschlößtal . Tauer includes the Matreier Tauernhaus (1,511 meters high) with the Chapel of St. Bartholomew, the Schildalm and the New Prager Hut . Tauer is connected to the rest of the community via the Felbertauernstrasse .

Buildings

The Schildalm consists of three groups of buildings with a total of twelve alpine huts, which were designed as two-storey log and post-beam buildings. They have rubble stone foundations and shingle-roofed gable roofs, with the oldest of the objects dating from 1681 to 1868. The Matreier Tauernhaus was first mentioned in a document in 1448 and for a long time served as a hostel for travelers across the Felbertauern . The Tauernhaus also includes an alpine settlement and the chapel dedicated to St. Bartholomew, the current shape of which dates from around 1840.
