Hubert Y. "Bert" Sprague (born December 19, 1909 , † December 13, 1991 ) was an American rancher and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

Not much is known about HY Sprague. He ran a ranch in Star Valley , about 5  Miles east of Payson ( Gila County ). His cattle he knew with the branding "BS". Sprague said:

"It stands for brown sugar."

"It stood for brown sugar."

His hobby was to collect dead animals from the country roads, then bring them home and skin them. During one of these forays in January 1983 he was walking along Arizona Highway 260 with a dead skunk . At the time he was 73 years old. He made his forays on the country road between Star Valley and Payson as there were few live skunks around his property. In Sprague's view, it was because of the many dogs in the area. In the remaining time he thought about improvements to his home, a rectangular metal building on a hill in Star Valley. He used tomato juice to cover up the smell of the furs, but did not sell the furs on.

Sprague was State Treasurer of Arizona from 1959 until his resignation on March 19, 1960 . During this time he lived in Tucson ( Pima County ) and Phoenix ( Maricopa County ). On March 24, 1960, Governor Paul Jones Fannin named Republican John Quebedeaux to succeed him.

He gave up running his ranch in the late 1970s. His wife suffered from arthritis . Sprague said:

"I couldn't ride two horses at the same time."
