Charles H. Garland

Charles Horace Garland junior (born January 7, 1899 in Water Valley , Mississippi , † December 6, 1984 in Phoenix , Arizona ) was an American officer , businessman and politician ( Republican Party ). He was also active in the radio industry.

Career

Charles Horace Garland junior was born in 1899 to Charles Horace Garland (1863-1933) and his wife Nancy Elizabeth (1868-1921; maiden name depending on the source Bettis or Bettes) in Yalobusha County . His father was a storekeeper for the Illinois Central Railroad in Chicago ( Illinois ). Nothing is known about his youth. During the First World War he served in the 155th  Infantry . Over time, he rose from the rank of sergeant to second lieutenant. Most recently he was stationed in Company 23, Automatic Replacement Draft, in Camp Pike ( Arkansas ) in 1918 .

On November 21, 1918 he married his wife Lela Wilma Mercier in McComb (Mississippi). The couple had two sons: Robert Courtney and Richard Henry.

Between 1925 and 1944 he worked for WBBM as program director and sales manager for the CBS station . In the early days he also worked as the chief announcer. According to his son Robert, he was in the 1920s, a ragtime jazz pianist , which more than 450  music rolls (player piano rolls) recorded.

Garland also had a political career. He became Alderman of Des Plaines, Illinois in 1937 and Mayor of Des Plaines in 1941. His tenure as mayor was overshadowed by the Second World War . In 1944 he decided to run for the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 7th  constituency of Illinois . In the Republican primaries, he defeated nine challengers, but lost the 1944 congressional election to Democratic candidate William W. Link .

After his defeat in the congressional elections, he moved to Phoenix (Arizona) in 1944 to take over the radio station KPHO with the country singer and actor Gene Autry . In the following years they also took over the radio station KOOL and built the radio station KOPO (today KOLD ). In 1955 Garland founded his own advertising agency which bore his name. The company was later sold by his son Robert.

Garland continued his political activities in Arizona. He was chairman of the Maricopa County's Central Republican Committee several times . In 1961 he was appointed Executive Secretary to the Arizona State Fair Commission - a position he held until his resignation in 1966. He resigned to run for State Treasurer of Arizona. In the 1966 election, he defeated former State Treasurer of Arizona JW Kelly . Garland began his two-year term in 1967. Since the Arizona state constitution did not allow a second consecutive term, he stepped down from office in 1969. In his first year in office he earned $ 984,181  in bank interest and in his second year in office more than $ 2.5 million. At the age of 70 he was elected Arizona Corporation Commissioner . He was the first Republican to hold this post.

He died on December 6, 1984 at the age of 85 in St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix.

He was a member of the Freemasons , Shriner , Kiwanis, and the American Legion .

Trivia

Garland attended Blackstone Law School. There is no proof of a degree.
