William Morton Cox

William Morton Cox (born January 21, 1880 in French Lick Springs , Indiana , † November 4, 1970 in Phoenix , Arizona ) was an American train driver and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

William Morton Cox, son of Margaret Jane Melbourne (1858–1941) and Charles Willem Cox (1854–1906), was born in Orange County in 1880 . His father was born in French Lick Springs and served as a minister in the Church of Christ , like his father before him, Christopher Cox (1827-1897). William Morton Cox graduated from high school in Paoli . In the following years he worked as a train driver for the Southern Pacific Railroad and the Union Pacific Railroad in California and Utah . On July 17, 1905, he married Elise Anna Breitkreutz (1878-1954) from Omaha ( Nebraska ) in California. The couple had a daughter named Marian Roberta Cox (1907–1980). The family moved then in 1906 in the Arizona Territory and settled there in Bisbee ( Cochise County ) down. Cox worked in the mechanical department at C&A Mining Company and served on Bisbee City Council during those years.

From 1927 to 1930 he was a treasurer of Cochise County. Cox ran for the Democratic nomination for the post of Treasurer of State of Arizona in 1930 , but was defeated by his challenger Mit Simms in the primaries . In 1932 he was elected Treasurer of State of Arizona. Cox held the post from 1933 to 1935. He then sat on the Arizona Corporation Commission from 1935 to 1940 . In 1940 he became Secretary of the Arizona Colorado River Commission - a position he held until the commission was dissolved in 1945. Cox ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination for the post of Secretary of State of Arizona in 1948 , but was defeated in the primary by his challenger Wesley Bolin . After the creation of the Arizona Department of Real Estate in 1949, he became its first Real Estate Commissioner - a position he held until his retirement in 1960.

After his death in Phoenix in 1970 he was buried next to his wife in the Greenwood Memory Lawn Cemetery .
