history

1891–1926 Workers' Choir "Union"

After the repeal of Bismarck 's Socialist Law , numerous social democratic and trade union associations were founded in the German Empire . The forerunner of the Hans Sachs Choir in Nuremberg in 1891 : the Arbeitergesangverein Union , a male choir . He pursued the goal of "practicing music and folk culture and bringing it into the working class". This was mainly done through the artistic design of festivals. Joint appearances of the choir with the Nuremberg Philharmonic can be traced back to around 1910. In 1911 the first “chair concert” took place, during which “no drinks were served and smoking was prohibited”.

1926–1933 Folk Choir "Hans Sachs"

In 1926 the workers choir "Union" merged with the "Volkschor Nürnberg-West" and the "Volkschor Nürnberg-Süd". From now on women were also allowed to sing along: A large mixed choir was formed. With the designation “Volkschor” one emphasized, in the sense of the labor movement, the right to education and cultural activity for all people. The Nuremberg shoemaker - poet Hans Sachs was chosen as the patron saint , who served as a model for the connection between artistry and work and whose life and work had itself become an object of art, for example in the poem Hans Sachsens poetic mission (1776) by Johann Wolfgang Goethe or the operas Hans Sachs (1840/45) by Albert Lortzing and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (1845–68) by Richard Wagner .

The activities of the folk choir "Hans Sachs" ended with the beginning of the National Socialism . In the first few months of 1933 the state dissolved the choir. “Members of state, public service and municipal services” were induced to resign from the choir, which was accused of “ Marxist attitudes”, so that “there was no financial basis for the continuation of the association. This prompted the choir and thus the association to dissolve on April 9, 1933 ”.

Re-establishment after the liberation

In 1947 it was re-established with the approval of the American military government . In the following years there was a bigger concert every two to three years.

Since 1968: Hans Sachs Choir

In 1968 Wolfgang Riedelbauch, then a répétiteur at the Regensburg City Theater , took over the direction of the choir. It was under him that it got its current name: Hans Sachs Choir . The maintenance of the classical oratorio literature , taking into account historical performance practice , and the performance of new works became the program that is still valid today.

From 2000 to 2013, Julian Christoph Tölle, lecturer at the Faculty of Education at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg , was director of the Hans Sachs Choir. He made possible u. a. the collaboration with Singer Pur and the Ensemble Kontraste . In February 2014 the general assembly of the Hans Sachs Choir elects Guido Johannes Rumstadt as the new artistic director. The cooperation with him begins in July 2014. Marco Mulzer - the previous assistant to Julian Tölle - took over the acting direction of the choir in the first half of the year.

Rumstadt is professor for orchestra and conducting at the Nuremberg University of Music and has been the first conductor at the Nuremberg State Theater since 2007. He studied conducting in Karlsruhe, Hamburg and Salzburg. His first positions as Kapellmeister took him to the State Theater in Mainz, the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe and as First Kapellmeister to the State Theater Wiesbaden and the Frankfurt Opera. During this time, Guido Johannes Rumstadt made guest appearances at numerous international opera houses, including the English National Opera, New York City Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Cologne Opera and the Théâtre La Monnaie, Brussels.

From 1998 to 2004 Guido Johannes Rumstadt was General Music Director of the Regensburg Theater. A particular focus of his work was the performance of contemporary and forgotten works. In 2001 he was nominated Conductor of the Year in the specialist magazine Opernwelt.

Rumstadt kicks off with the Hans Sachs Choir with the rehearsals for the Classic Open Air of the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra on August 9th in Luitpoldhain.
