Bernissart is a municipality in the Belgian province of Hainaut . It consists of the places Bernissart, Blaton, Harchies, Pommeroeul and Ville-Pommeroeul.

Bernissart is famous for finding dinosaurs. In 1878, dozens of Iguanodon skeletons were discovered in a coal mine . On the one hand, the find was the first proof that this species lived in a gregarious manner ; on the other hand, the bones made it possible for the first time to reconstruct the entire skeleton and thus to prove that the Iguanodon walked upright (i.e. on its hind feet).

The French philosopher Luce Irigaray was born in Blaton in 1930.
