Henri "Sillen" Sillanpää (born June 4, 1979 in Tornio ) is a Finnish football player . The goalkeeper , who made his debut in the Finnish national team in 2004 , has played his career so far exclusively in Northern Europe and has been active in his home country, Sweden and Norway.

Career

Born in Northern Finland, Sillanpää began his adult career in 1998 at Vaasan PS . He soon established himself as a regular goalkeeper in the Veikkausliiga and was appointed to the Finnish U-21 national team . In 1999 and 2000 he won the Finnish league cup with the club . Later, the almost two years younger Janne Henriksson pushed him between the posts, so that he was first awarded to third division club FC Kiisto in 2001 and in the summer of 2002 to second division IF Närpes Kraft in the Ykkönen . In early 2003 he moved to Tornion Palloveikot within the second division . After the club had failed in the promotion round to Veikkausliiga last year, the goalkeeper contributed to the promotion to the top division as a core force, who was on the pitch in all 26 games of the season.

Despite the promotion, Sillanpää left his previous club after only one season and joined the first division club AC Allianssi in 2004 . With the club he finished second in the table at the end of the 2004 season , but champions FC Haka had an eleven point lead. In the same year he was also again Finnish league cup winner. The goalkeeper had convinced over the course of the season, so that national coach Antti Muurinen helped him make his international debut in a 0-0 draw against Oman in December of that year . In the following years he was also a frequent member of the squad, but was regularly overshadowed by Antti Niemi and Jussi Jääskeläinen . In the 2005/06 UEFA Cup , he and his club team led by Hocine Chebaïki , Timo Marjamaa , Chris Cleaver and Jean-Pierre La Placa reached the second qualifying round after a 3-0 win and a 1-1 draw against CS Pétange from Luxembourg, after a 0-0 away draw against Norwegian representatives SK Brann , goals from Trond Ludvigsen and Charlie Miller meant they were eliminated due to a 2-0 home defeat. While he was still a regular in the league with 23 league games - he was only briefly represented by the young man Tomi Maanoja - and had defended the title in the league cup, his club fell into disrepute after an 8-0 defeat against FC Haka for alleged match-fixing.

Sillanpää left the club and returned to his former club Vaasan PS at the turn of the year 2005/06, who had been promoted to the first division again. With the team, he placed himself regularly in the lower midfield of the table in the following years. In spring 2010 he moved abroad for the first time when the then 30-year-old signed a four-year contract with the Swedish club GAIS . He was second goalkeeper at the Gothenburg first division club, and on the occasion of an injury to Dime Jankulovski , he made his debut in the Allsvenskan in a 2-0 defeat by Trelleborgs FF in May . This was initially his only league use in the top Swedish division for a year, only after a renewed injury to the competitor the following summer did he conquer the regular place between the posts. Under coach Alexander Axén , he played 15 league games by the end of the season and reached fifth place on the side of Jesper Florén , Wanderson do Carmo , Fredrik Lundgren and Reuben Ayarna . His good performances were crowned by national coach Mixu Paatelainen with a comeback in the national team when he was called back to the national team in early 2012 and finally in the summer, almost six and a half years after his last defeat against South Korea in January 2006 International match came, on the occasion of the Baltic Cup 2012 in the final against Latvia in the half for Lukáš Hrádecký came on . His fifth international match, however, remained without a title win, the Finns missed the tournament win on penalties .

A short time later, in July 2012, Jankulovski conquered the regular place between the posts at GAIS, who so far had only one win of the season at the bottom of the table in the relegation battle. Sillanpää then left the club on loan shortly before the end of the transfer window in August and joined the Norwegian club Tromsø IL until the end of the season . As a substitute behind Benny Lekström , who replaced his injured Swedish compatriot Marcus Sahlman , he only came to two stakes. After the end of the season, the club therefore announced that it did not want to use the contractually agreed purchase option. Since GAIS was relegated to the end of the season from the Allsvenskan and sought the separation of several players including Sillanpää, this went to look for a club.

At the beginning of December it was announced that Sillanpää would return to Finland to his former station Vaasan PS and sign a three-year contract there. As a regular goalkeeper in 30 of the 33 season games, he and the team reached qualification for the 2014/15 UEFA Europa League at the end of his first season in third . On the sixth day of the following season he was injured and was subsequently replaced by Janne Henriksson and the youngster Karl-Filip Eriksson .
