Hermann Olze Ludwig von Holleben (born March 5, 1804 in Gartz , † April 10, 1878 in Berlin ) was a Prussian infantry general .

Life

He was the son of Wilhelm Friedrich Karl Ludwig von Holleben (1777–1815) and his wife Dorothea Albertine Friederike, née von Arnim (1780–1861). His father was killed during the Wars of Liberation as a Prussian Rittmeister in the “Queen” Dragoon Regiment at the battle of Ligny .

Military career

Holleben attended high school in Stargard and was a cadet in Berlin from May 1817 . On January 9, 1821, he was transferred as a second lieutenant to the 21st Infantry Regiment (4th Pomeranian) of the Prussian Army . In the same year he was assigned to the division school of the 4th Division as a teacher of mathematics until 1823 . Holleben then graduated from the General War School and, after successfully completing his degree, worked again as a teacher at the division school from 1824 to 1826. This was followed by a position as a teacher at the Kadettenhaus Berlin from May 1, 1826, and in this position Holleben was promoted to Prime Lieutenant on May 20, 1836 . In addition, from 1838 he was also a teacher of tactics at the United Artillery and Engineering School and rose the following year to become the first military teacher at the Cadet House. In 1840 Holleben became a captain and in 1844 also an extraordinary member of the military study commission, which worked out changes in military teaching and education.

With his promotion to major on May 31, 1847, Holleben was appointed adjutant to the General Inspectorate of Military Instruction and Education, but continued to teach at the Cadet House in Berlin. After the German Revolution he sat in the Volkshaus of the Erfurt Union Parliament and then worked as a member of the Aschersleben constituency in the Second Chamber of the Prussian Landtag. Initially still as a lieutenant colonel , Holleben took up the position of director of the senior military examination commission on September 18, 1856 with the rank and fees of regimental commander. At the same time he became a member of the military study commissions and on October 15, 1856 was promoted to colonel and on May 31, 1859 to major general . In 1864 he received the patent as Lieutenant General and became President of the Upper Military Examination Commission. He was to keep this position until he was adopted.

For the duration of the mobile relationship on the occasion of the German War in 1866, Holleben was additionally entrusted with running the business as commander of the cadet corps. On 26 July 1870 he was awarded the character as General of Infantry . On the occasion of its 50th anniversary service of the faculty of arts awarded him Friedrich-Wilhelms-University of Berlin , the doctorate .

After winning the war against France , Holleben campaigned for the establishment of a Reichsinvalidenfonds, which arose from funds from the French war compensation. On July 22, 1871, Holleben was appointed chairman of the administrative committee of the Kaiser Wilhelm Foundation for the disabled. From March 6, 1872, he was also the director of the life insurance institute for the army and navy , until he was finally put up for disposal on September 21, 1877 with the award of the Grand Cross of the Red Eagle Order with the statutory pension .

His activity was essentially scientific; His services to the spiritual advancement and moral education of the army in the various educational institutions are not insignificant. In recognition of these longstanding services, Holleben was appointed a member of the Prussian mansion for life by King Wilhelm I on November 30, 1872 .

Hermann von Holleben died in Berlin in 1878 at the age of 74. He was buried in Cemetery III of the Jerusalem and New Churches in front of the Hallesches Tor . The grave has not been preserved.
