August Hermann Oßwald since 1905 von Oßwald (born September 24, 1852 in Wilhelmsdorf , † November 28, 1914 in Bois de Cheppy , France ) was a Württemberg lieutenant general .

Life

After attending a private school in his hometown and the teachers' college in Reutlingen , Oßwald joined the 2nd Infantry Regiment (Kaiser Wilhelm, King of Prussia) No. 120 of the Württemberg Army on January 3, 1873 as a one-year volunteer . Two weeks later he was transferred to the 7th Infantry Regiment No. 125 and he was promoted to second lieutenant until the beginning of October 1874 . From October 1876 Oßwald was an adjutant at the district command in Horb am Neckar for two yearscommanded and served as a battalion adjutant from August 1881 to January 1884. In this capacity he rose to prime lieutenant and was then regimental adjutant until the end of June 1888. When he was promoted to captain on March 23, 1889, he was appointed company commander . In this capacity Oßwald was commanded on December 21, 1891 under position à la suite of his regiment to Prussia in the infantry regiment "Prince Leopold von Anhalt-Dessau" (1st Magdeburg) No. 26 and on January 27, 1897 as major dem Association aggregated . With effect from April 1, 1897, he was released from his command in Prussia on March 22, 1897 and transferred as an aggregate to the newly established 10th Infantry Regiment No. 180 in Tübingen . This was followed on May 24, 1898 as a battalion commander in the 4th Infantry Regiment "Emperor Franz Josef of Austria, King of Hungary" No. 122 , before Oßwald on March 22, 1903 to the staff of the 2nd Infantry Regiment ( Kaiser Wilhelm, King of Prussia) No. 120 came and was promoted to lieutenant colonel in mid-April 1903 . In this capacity, he was awarded the Cross of Honor of the Order of the Württemberg Crown on February 25, 1904 . With the award the elevation to the personal nobility was connected and he was allowed to call himself "von Oßwald" after the entry in the nobility register .

From April 10, 1906 to June 17, 1908, Oßwald was Colonel in command of the 4th Infantry Regiment "Emperor Franz Josef of Austria, King of Hungary" No. 122 in Heilbronn and then in the same position in the 8th Infantry Regiment " Grand Duke Friedrich von Baden ”No. 126 . In this position he received the Commander's Cross II. Class of the Order of the Zähringer Löwen in July and the Crown Order II. Class in September 1908 . With his promotion to major general , Oßwald was commander of the 53rd Infantry Brigade (3rd Royal Württembergische) stationed in Ulm on April 20, 1910, and was awarded the Commander-in-Chief of the Order of the Württemberg Crown on February 25, 1912. With the outbreak of the First World War , Oßwald was re-used as a zD officer and, according to the mobilization regulations, was appointed commander of the 53rd (Württemberg) Landwehr Infantry Brigade on August 2, 1914. With this large formation he took part in the battle of Longwy at the end of the month and covered the eastern flank of the XIII in mid-September when retreating from the Marne . (Royal Württemberg) Army Corps . Subsequently, his brigade was in trench warfare before Verdun . On November 1, 1914, Oßwald was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Military Merit. He fell in the Bois de Cheppy on November 28, 1914.

His son Erwin (1882–1947) also started an officer career. He was promoted to general of the infantry and was last commanding general of the Deputy V Army Corps and commander in military district V (Stuttgart) during the Second World War .
