Hermann Gustav Clemens von Rex (born January 28, 1820 in Paderborn , † February 19, 1886 in Naumburg (Saale) ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

origin

He was the son of the later Prussian major general Karl August Wilhelm von Rex (1774–1834) and his wife Marianne Auguste, née von Hessler (1793–1869). The Lieutenant General Rudolf Rex (1817-1892) was his older brother.

Military career

Rex attended the cadet schools in Potsdam and Berlin . Subsequently, on August 15, 1838, he was transferred as a second lieutenant to the 13th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army in Münster . In 1847/48 Rex was assigned to the 7th Combined Reserve Battalion. He then acted from March 31, 1849 to June 22, 1852 as adjutant of the 2nd Battalion and was then transferred to the 39th Infantry Regiment (7th Reserve Regiment) in Mainz under promotion to Prime Lieutenant . Here he was promoted to captain in June 1854 and served as a company commander in the regiment's Landwehr battalion in 1855/56. On July 26, 1856 he was appointed company commander . In this capacity, Rex joined the 17th Combined Infantry Regiment on May 8, 1860, from which the 8th Westphalian Infantry Regiment (No. 57) was formed shortly afterwards . On February 23, 1861 he was transferred to the 3rd Westphalian Infantry Regiment No. 17 in Wesel and rose to major in mid-February 1864 . As commander of the 1st Battalion, Rex took part in the battles near Münchengrätz and Königgrätz during the war against Austria in 1866 and was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, IV class with swords , for his achievements .

On March 22, 1868, Rex was promoted to lieutenant colonel , on July 14, 1870, he was commander of the 3rd Posen Infantry Regiment No. 58 and, in this position, on July 26, 1870, colonel . He led his regiment in 1870/71 in the war against France in the association of the 9th Division in the battles near Weißenburg , Wörth and Sedan . During the siege of Paris Rex fell ill and in mid-December 1870 briefly handed over the leadership to Major von Klaß . After the peace agreement he returned to the garrison in Glogau , awarded with both classes of the Iron Cross . Due to illness, he had to take several months' convalescence leave in Kissingen . Since the state of health did not improve, Rex received on September 15, 1874 with the character as major general his departure with the statutory pension . Wilhelm I honored him after his departure by awarding him the Order of the Red Eagle III. Class with a bow and swords on the rings.

He was a legal knight of the Order of St. John .

family

Rex had married Marie Luise Meta Herzog (1838-1894) on April 26, 1860 in Beuchlitz . Several children emerged from the marriage:
