Karl Otto Hermann Wichmann , von Wichmann since 1859 , (born December 15, 1820 in Magdeburg , † October 27, 1886 in Breslau ) was a Prussian general of the cavalry .

Life

He was the son of the Prussian Colonel a. D. Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Wichmann (1794–1850) and his wife Amalie, née Eses (1800–1850).

Military career

Wichmann visited the cadet house in Berlin and was then transferred on August 15, 1838 as a second lieutenant to the 8th Cuirassier Regiment of the Prussian Army . For further training he was assigned to the General War School for two years from March 1846 . In 1849, during the suppression of the Baden Revolution , Wichmann and his regiment took part in the siege of Rastatt . The following year he rose to regimental adjutant and was promoted to prime lieutenant on May 10, 1851 in this capacity . On June 3, 1853, when he was promoted to Rittmeister, he was transferred to the 3rd cuirassier regiment and commanded as a squadron leader to the tribe of the 8th heavy Landwehr cavalry regiment. From April 16, 1857, he was employed as adjutant of the 15th Division and on November 10, 1857, Wichmann was transferred back to the 8th Cuirassier Regiment, leaving this command. With a patent from August 13, 1853, he was transferred to the 5th Hussar Regiment on March 23, 1858 and commanded as an adjutant to the 4th Division .

Prince Regent Wilhelm raised Wichmann to the hereditary Prussian nobility on January 22, 1859, representing King Friedrich Wilhelm IV .

During the mobile relationship on the occasion of the Sardinian War , he was adjutant of the 2nd Cavalry Division in 1859. When the army was reorganized, Wichmann was transferred to the 4th Dragoons Regiment as squadron chief in May 1860 and was promoted to major in September 1861 . As such, he joined the General Staff on November 28, 1861, and on May 13, 1864, he was appointed a la suite adjutant of the Berlin government. In this capacity, promoted to lieutenant colonel on June 18, 1865 , he was commissioned from January 4, 1866 to lead the 2nd Silesian Dragoon Regiment No. 8 . On April 3, 1866, he was appointed regimental commander. In the same year Wichmann led his dragoons in the war against Austria in the battles near Skalitz and Schweinschädel . In the battle of Nachod he received a head injury in the scuffle and also lost his horse. Wichmann stayed with his troops and was able to significantly influence the outcome of the battle through his work. For his behavior he was awarded the order Pour le Mérite .

After the war, Wichmann was promoted to colonel on April 18, 1867. A month later he was initially assigned to serve at the General Command of the II Army Corps , followed on June 29, 1867 by his appointment as Chief of the General Staff there. In this position he served under the commanding general Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia , with whom Wichmann had been friends since the fighting at Nachod. During the war against France in 1870/71 he continued to work in this function and took part, now under the commanding General Eduard Friedrich Karl von Fransecky , in the battle of Gravelotte , the sieges of Metz and Paris and in the southern army .

Awarded both classes of the Iron Cross , Wichmann was transferred to the army officers after the Peace of Frankfurt on May 23, 1871 with his previous uniform and was appointed commander of the cavalry brigade of the Grand Ducal Hessian Division . Under position à la suite of the general staff, he was appointed brigade commander on January 1, 1872 and a few days later promoted to major general. On June 26, 1877, he was commissioned to lead the Grand Ducal Hessian (25th) Division and on September 25, 1877, Wichmann was promoted to lieutenant general and commander of this large unit . Army Corps and promoted to General of the Cavalry on September 18, 1886. He died in the course of his service after a short illness of a severe cold and was buried in Naumburg (Saale) .
