Hinterbach has been a district of Oberzent in the Odenwald district in southern Hesse since January 1, 2018 .

Geographical location

The place is in the district of Finkenbach and stretches, surrounded by forest, in the middle part of the Buntsandstein-Odenwald in the Geo-Naturpark Bergstraße-Odenwald as a street village in the valley of the Hinterbach , the right source brook of the Finkenbach . District road 37 runs through the village .

To the north-west of the village lies Raubach , to the north is the Saubuche Forestry Monument , and to the south-east is Finkenbach. To the east ( a nameless height at 430  m above sea  level ) and to the west and south (with the Wetterberg at 386.8  m above sea  level ) larger forest areas reach up to the place.

history

The area was first mentioned in documents in 1364 as the property of the Erbach taverns . The name changed from Obstbach (1364) to Hinderbach (1509) when a hunting district was established and given to Kurpfalz , the lords of the Erbach taverns, but returned to them as early as 1513. The hamlet itself was only founded as a settlement in the middle of the 18th century by the branch of the Counts of Erbach-Fürstenau. In 1787 the area became part of the Freienstein Office, and in 1806 the Office went to the Grand Duchy of Hesse . In 1829 15 houses with 118 inhabitants are reported. Without its own delineation, the hamlet has always been viewed as a branch of the formerly independent municipality of Ober-Finkenbach. On July 1, 1949, Ober- and Unter-Finkenbach were merged into Finkenbach. Hinterbach came to the municipality of Rothenberg on July 1, 1971 with the main town of Finkenbach and became a district of the new town of Oberzent on January 1, 2018. The place had 29 houses with 75 inhabitants at the beginning of 2018 and was presented on February 10, 2018 as Dolles Dorf on Hessen TV .

Culture and sights

An older hydraulic ram is still in use in Hinterbach and is classified as the only Hessian cultural monument in the district, the ram in Brunnenstrasse . (See also list of cultural monuments in Oberzent )

In addition to a Kneipp basin, there is also the so-called “ Kohlenmeilerplatz” , where a festival lasting several days takes place every year in July, during which a charcoal kiln is approached according to the old custom. The Hinterbach flowing past with its source area near Olfen is fed by several other sources in the area of the village's flow area, which are used to fill the Finkenbachquelle mineral water and guarantee several jobs.
