Horná Mariková is a municipality in northwestern Slovakia with 575 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) and belongs to the Okres Považská Bystrica , a district of the Trenčiansky kraj .

geography

The village is located in the Javorník Mountains on the upper course of the Marikovský creek . The center of the village is at an altitude of 440  m nm and is 20 kilometers from Považská Bystrica .

Administratively, the municipality is divided into 10 parts: Belejov, Hlboké, Modlatín, Pagaňov, Ráztoka, Rovné, Stolečné, Udička, Vlkov and Žrnové.

history

The history up to the 18th century is largely identical to that of the neighboring village Dolná Mariková . The area was settled in the 17th century as part of the Wallachian colonization. In 1789 a parish called Hornyo Hlboke was established. In 1828 there were 309 houses and 2598 inhabitants. Many of them were employed in agriculture and forestry, but low fertility has forced many to seek work abroad.

In 1954, Horná Mariková split from the previously existing municipality of Mariková.

According to the 2011 census, Horná Mariková had 660 inhabitants, including 610 Slovaks, four Czechs and one Moravian. 45 residents gave no answer. 527 residents supported the Roman Catholic Church and one inhabitant each for the Greek Catholic, Orthodox and New Apostolic Church. 31 residents had no denomination and 99 residents had no denomination.
