The Huayllay district is located in the province of Pasco of Pasco region in central Peru . The district has an area of ​​1026.87 km². At the 2017 census there were 9,577 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 8355, in 2007 it was 10,617. The district administration is in the 4310  m high altitude city Huayllay with 6,736 inhabitants (2017).

Geographical location

The district of Huayllay is located in the southwest of the province of Pasco in the Andean highlands , about 140 km northeast of the state capital Lima . The district is drained via the Río Mantaro , which flows south along the eastern district boundary. The western border of the district forms the continental watershed , which runs along the Peruvian Western Cordillera . There are numerous lakes in the district, including Lago Punrun in the north, Lago Huaraoncocha in the southwest and Lago Yanacocha in the southeast. There are several mines in the Huayllay district that mine ore, including the Chungar mine of the Volcan Compañía Minera in the southwest of the district. The vanadium mine Minas Ragra in the far west of the district, which was closed in 1955, is a type locality of the minerals Hewettit and Pascoit . In the northeast of the district is the Huayllay National Reserve .

The Huayllay district borders in the west on the districts Santa Leonor ( province Huaura ) and Oyón ( province Oyón ), in the north on the district Simón Bolívar , in the east on the districts Vicco and Ondores ( province Junín ) and in the south on the district Santa Bárbara de Carhuacayán ( Yauli Province ).
